An intense affair erupts between a teenage boy, Michael, and Hanna, a beautiful woman twice his age. Over a lazy summer, Michael reads classic literature to her as they lounge about in bed. Then, suddenly, Hanna is gone, leaving Michael heartbroken.

Fast forward a decade later. Michael (Ralph Fiennes) is shocked to run into her again. Only now Hanna (Oscar-nominated Kate Winslet) is on the docket accused of Nazi war crimes, and he is a law student observing the trials. What will Michael discover about his former lover? How will this knowledge affect his conscience?

This Best Picture-nominated movie tackles the morally complex nature of guilt and its effect on the generation of Germans who grew up immediately after the war.
