Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan), the youngest daughter of a wealthy English family, falsely accuses Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), the son of the family's housekeeper, of a violent crime. In love with Robbie, Briony's older sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) is heartbroken when he is unjustly sent to jail. The movie continues, stretching over several decades as we see how their lives unfold as a a result of events that occurred that hot summer night.
