An 18-year-old boy from the slums of Mumbai is one question away from winning 20 million rupees on India's version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? But, suspected of cheating, we meet Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) as he is enduring a brutal police interrogation prior to the taping of the second episode where he is to answer that final question. He's just a slumdog, they say--what could he possibly know? Surely he had been cheating.

But he won't confess. All he has to offer is the truth: he knew all the answers. And as he begins to explain how, the circumstances of his life begin to unfold, telling the story of how he ended up here.
