Mexican wedding cakes

A buttery, melt-in-your-mouth cookie that's usually ball-shaped and generally contains finely chopped almonds, pecans or hazelnuts. It's usually rolled in confectioners' sugar while still hot, then again after the cookie has cooled. Many countries have their own rendition of this rich cookie. Two versions are Russian tea cakes and Spain's polvorones.

My mother used to make Bon Bon cookies at Christmas time; a delicious buttery dough wrapped around a walnut half, date or marachino cherry, iced after cooling. A co-worker exclaimed Mexican Wedding Cakes when I'd taken some in on a food day; first time I'd heard them called that. She said they were so simular as to be the same only put together differently. Very, Very Good. From old Betty Crocker cook book.
