Family cooking traditions: My grandparents moved to the United States from Ukraine in the late 40's. My grandmother still makes traditional Ukranian food, though she actually learned most of the recipes in the US from other Ukrainian immigrants. We have a large vegetarian dinner (with fish) every Christmas Eve with the traditional Ukrainian dishes. They're fantastic. It's definitely my favorite meal of the year!
Cooking triumphs: Making pyrogy with my Baba and continuing the family tradition. Step-by-step she went over the process with my aunt, my sisters, and I. While we were all pleased with the results, my Baba said, "It's good for your first time." Granted, they looked a little funny, but I was still happy with the way they tasted and that's what matters most!
Cooking tragedies: Making borscht and realizing the difference between garlic cloves and garlic powder.
More About Esmee
Favorite things to cook: I love just about anything that combines fresh meat, vegetables and spices/herbs. In the summer, I couldn't live without my barbecue. In the winter, I love pastas, soups and fresh breads. I never know what I am going to cook until I go to my local market. I just buy whatever looks good (or is on sale) and figure out what to make when I get home.
Family cooking traditions: Sunday dinners are a tradition I couldn't live without. I find it really relaxing to spend the afternoon cooking a special meal.
Cooking triumphs: Homemade sushi!
