Garam Masala

Description

Garam is the Hindi word for "warm" or "hot," and this blend of dry-roasted ground spices from the colder climes of northern India adds a sense of warmth to both palate and spirit. There are as many variations of garam masala (which may contain up to 12 spices) as there are Indian cooks. It can include black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, cardamom, dried chiles, fennel, ginger, mace and nutmeg. Garam masala may be purchased in Indian markets and in the gourmet section of some supermarkets.

Uses

Garam masala is usually either added to a curries, vegetable dishes, soups, or stews toward the end of cooking or sprinkled over the surface just before serving.




Color

Depending on the spice combination, it can be tawny brown, tan, or golden

    I love this stuff, started using in other dishes something as simple as spinach and it will truly enhance the flavor.

    I like to make my garam masala fresh in the bowl and mortor, and I use much smaller amounts as we are just a family of four. ;) I love that this is calculated so large groups / or / restaurant chefs can take a peek at a great garam masala... This is what I use in my cream / yogurt sauce for the lamb masala, so nice. Thanks for posting ;)

    This sounds great and I have read about it before but have yet to find an exact recipe for the garam masala ingredients - how much of what ingredients? Please advise. Thanks! :-)

    i also would like a recipe for garam masala would like to try making some garam masala. i am housebound and have all the ingredients except the garam masala. thank you m

    here is recipe i use. there are many garam masala 1 t. cumin 1 t. pepper (add more if like heat) 1 t. cinnamon 1/2 t. nutmeg 1 T. fennel 1 T. ginger 1 T. crushed cloves 1 T. chili powder mix well. i also make my own adobo some fun....and cheaper
