although I love farmers markets in the lower 48, here in Alaska I pay double the price for "homegrown" or organic...eating healthy is not easy up here when a head of lettuce can go as high as four dollars...so on to my greenhouse...costly to build but saves me bucks...

That's tough. I've heard that Alaska grows some huge cabbage. Is that true?

It is true that there are huge cabbages in AK. When I was a kid growing up there, we grew one that could hardly fit into a wheelbarrow. But the growing season is very, very short.

I am so grateful to live in the San Francisco Bay Area... very spoiled by amazing, fresh, and cheap produce all year round! Of course, we make up for it in rent :(

Great idea to add the Farmer's Market area...I absolutely love my Farmer's Market at Clear Lake Shores...it's a true "farmer's" market with the farms coming in to sell everything from artisan breads to goat cheese ice cream, organic herb and vegetable plants! And I can walk to it!

When a cook gives stars to a recipe ans says leave out or change this for that but doesn't say what they are talking about ,why isn't there a way to contact that cook and find out what he/she is talking about? I tried to do this but all I get is an address and no email or way to find out. George

Also,I made two batches of crabapple jelly. One was ferfect and the other would never jell if boiled for a week. What did I do wrong? George

I love the fact that the Poulsbo WA farmers market takes food stamps so people can actually feed their family healthy organic food even if they are not making enough to get by.

teri4188 - Have you tried full circle farms? They deliver to I think everywhere in Alaska, except maybe the smallest villages. There's a farmer's market in Juneau, but it is pit-i-ful. The only thing I like about living in Seattle is going to the Ballard farmer's market.

I have always loved the farmers market and I understand how important it is for the comuninity. I am also a LMT who gives local farmers a discount. With out farmers we have no food and local grown is the best.

Does anyone know of an onion called ramps? I have looked everywhere for them but can't find them in NC.

csm2844-Ramps are wild onions, growing in the woods. The taste is onion with an overtone of garlic.I imagine a mix of green onions and garlic could substitute.Used in Southern U.S. recipes and also in Spain.I find them wild here in MI.
