Farmers' Market Adventures: Blog Reports

By:   Judith H. Dern

Across the country, these farmers’ market fans love to blog about their finds and cooking fun.

Summer is here and it's showtime for neighborhood farmers' markets.

America celebrates National Farmers Market Week, August 2-8! First proclaimed in 2000 by the US Secretary of Agriculture, National Farmers Market Week gives 4,800 farmers markets and their fans something to celebrate. As families increasingly buy direct from farmers, they are discovering a fresh source of local food while strengthening their communities.

What could be more fun than blogging about farmers' markets?! From coast to coast, this group of Allrecipes Supporting Members LOVES farmers' markets! Read about what they're finding, the field-fresh produce they're taking home and cooking, and their favorite summertime recipes. From strawberry shortcake to strawberry jam, you'll be inspired too!

Ripe, Ready and Right Around the Corner

Oregon's finest inspires this farmers' market maven. Rain or shine, she visits markets in Sandy, Gresham, and Portland to select from a bounty of fresh veggies, mushrooms, and strawberries.

Springfield, Illinois, is where this cook finds her farmers' market produce. Along with local peaches, she's taken happily carried home fresh bread, honey, and green beans.

    ...At First Bite

A move from Riverside, California, back to L.A., her beloved hometown, inspires this cook's happiness and renewed visits to area farmers' markets. She loves tasting samples and getting to know the farmers.

We don't have a local farmers market but we have a wonderful service that delivers local organic produce. You get a mixture of fruits and vegetables, and it exposes me to so many things that I may not buy in a market. I learned what a pluot is! I love making things with these fresh fruits and vegetables. It is a luxury that is goode for us!

Love this time of year for the Farmers Markets. Not only for the yummy fresh produce but also for the locals who make hand made and home made goodies. We also have a man who makes his own honey, his bees feed of pumpkin bloosoms, tasty.

The company I work for offers a framers market on Wednesdays and it is sooooo wonderful. I got to thinking for the towns without farmers markets maybe local Woman's clubs or other not-for-profits should lookinto this as it is a wonderful way to communicate to the community and easy way to make $$$$

Here in SW Florida the farmer's markets are busiest in fall, winter, and spring. Summer is just too hot for most veggies, although I grow enough basil, rosemary, and jalapenos to sell now. We also have a local company that will deliver fresh organic veggies and fruits to our door. They use many local farmers when available.

The Farmer's Market in Asheville, NC is a wonder to behold. I couldn't believe the amount of produce I saw there. I saw everything I've ever wanted there, right from the farmer. I could have stayed all day, but I was traveling and had to get on the road. I hope to return in the future.
