A real English ("full") breakfast will inevitably consist of a fried egg, a rasher of bacon (closer to Canadian than American), a banger (a pork sausage seasoned mildly with nutmeg, cloves, thyme, and mace), a grilled tomato, cold toast with sweet butter and marmalade, and hot tea (most likely with milk and sugar). Other things that might appear on your plate are fried mushrooms, beans in tomato sauce, smoked herring, black and white pudding, and sauteed kidneys. North of the border, you might be served oatmeal, scones, currant jam, Scotch eggs, and even haggis for breakfast. (Haggis, by the way, is a lovely dish!)

As a kid 50 years ago, I remember occasionally eating kippers (smoked herring) as an occasional alternative to the above. I don't agree about cold toast though, and usually, during my brakfastian occasional cholesterol orgy, fry toast bread, lovely. It was cooked in lard as well! Diced fried bread is great in salads, by the way.
