Editor's Picks: Grilling Gift Box

Looking for a perfect Father's Day gift or birthday present for your favorite pitmaster?

We love the spice rubs--available singly or in gift packs--from The Spice House, a small company founded in Milwaukee in 1957.

Jamaican Style Jerk Seasoning

This spicy blend is not for the faint of heart: warm flavors usually associated with baking (allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon) are fired up with Habanero pepper, onion, and garlic. For an authentic Jamaican jerk, make a marinade from the seasoning mix. Apply it to your meat--chicken, pork--and let the flavors develop overnight before grilling.

Cajun Seasoning

With Hungarian paprika for color, cayenne and Tellicherry pepper for heat, cumin, celery seed, garlic, and other flavors, this Cajun seasoning adds zip to all kinds of foods. Try it on catfish, ribs, chicken, and French fries. Tip: for "blackened" Cajun foods, you'll need a hot cast iron skillet rather than a grill.

Trinidad Lemon Garlic Marinade

This recipe was given to The Spice House by a Caribbean actor visiting Milwaukee. A simple, classic blend of powdered lemon peel, garlic, cloves, and ginger, it can be used for fried chicken, fish, grilled steaks, and hamburgers. Try it on eggs and salads, too.

Bronzeville Rib Rub

One of the store's most popular blends, this is a Southern-style rib rub. It honors the African-Americans who moved north to Chicago in the 1920s, '30s and '40s, bringing their family recipes with them. Use it on ribs and chops as a rub, or make a spicy barbeque sauce by adding a tablespoon of seasoning to a cup of ketchup or tomato sauce.

Vulcan's Fire Salt

While it's not part of the gift box, we loved this salt blend: it's named for the Roman god of fire. Use this salt to spice up Bloody Marys, popcorn, garlic bread, fries, and eggs.

Also try Penzey's for herbs and spices. Penzey's and The Spice House are very comparable. Owned by the same family. Prices and freshness both better than grocery store brands!
