Day of the Dead

Celebrate Día de los Muertos

In Mexico and other parts of the world, families celebrate and honor the lives of their loved ones and ancestors on the first and second days of November.

Bread of the Dead

Families bring orange marigolds and gifts of fruits, skull-shaped candies, liquor and wines to gravesites. One of the most common offerings is a sweet yeast bread called Pan de Muertos. Often the loaves are oval or round and topped with bone shapes.

Since Pan de Muertos is an enriched bread--made with butter, sugar, and eggs--it will take longer to rise than lean doughs. See Baking Yeast Breads for more tips.

Mexican Night

Whether you're heading to the cemetery on All Souls' Day or are staying indoors, warm spirits with a Mexican meal.

dear Ruby, guess I'm too late for 2010, but how about for 2011 a crock pot full of pulled pork for split rolls, and coleslaw on the side? I imagine someone who loves this day wil be able to disguise pulled pork in BBQ sauce as a cauldren full of shredded human flesh! Maybe cover the crock w/black construction paper. Can coleslaw be tinted green?

@ horsechic- Dia De Los Muertos is an indisputably MEXICAN holiday. it is NOT a European tradition. it is NOT "Spanish". Mexico and Spain are on 2 different continents. it is highly offensive to either culture to confuse the two, simply because they speak the same language. each of their cultures and food are so vastly different.

This holiday is not only Mexican, but Catholic it seems. Everything here in Italy even closed on Nov 2 in it's honor.
