Bridal Shower 101: Present Perfect

Now comes the main event: the opening of the gifts.

It's time to ooh and ahh over the swag. A couple of details will help things go smoothly.

  • Position the bride so all can see her as she unwraps her gifts
  • Assign a reliable person to record who gave what
  • Provide the means for transporting the gifts home: shopping bags or big baskets will do. If the married couple is moving away, consider gift certificates instead of heavy, bulky items

Happy Endings

Sachets, scented candles, spa products, potted herbs, jars of homemade cookie mix--these can be delightful mementos of the bridal shower.

For do-it-yourself party favors, set out bowls of candies and let guests fill small take-out cartons as they leave. Design a clever logo to print on self-adhesive labels for the cartons, or use a stamp from a craft store.

As someone who hosts quite a few bridal and baby showers, my gift for the mother- or bride-to-be is always the same. It's a decorated box (that can be displayed or used later) containing thank you notes, postage, pre-printed return address labels (the bride or mom's home address) and pre-printed address labels of all the shower guests (in a decorative script font). It never fails to please the recipient and it certainly makes writing all those notes of gratitude a little less daunting (not to mention less expensive). If you're not hosting the shower and don't have the guest list names and addresses, don't be afraid to ask the appropriate person for the list. The mom or bride will be happy you did.
