Best Barbeque Side Dishes

The best side dishes for a barbeque are the kinds you make ahead--or prepare right at the grill.

Tops of the Sides

Salads top the list of popular barbeque sides. Most can be made in advance, and many salads taste better after sitting overnight in the refrigerator.

Among the favorites: Potato salad, pasta salad, fruit salad, vegetable salad, bean salad, green salad, grain salad, layered salad, gelatin salad, and coleslaw. Make them the night before and you're ahead of the game.

Tip: If you're having green salad, remember to wait until the last minute to add the dressing and croutons.

Bread is another great barbecue side dish to make ahead of time. There's nothing better than mopping up extra sauce and juice with some freshly baked cornbread or savory herb bread. Next time somebody says, "what can I bring?" ask them to bring their favorite salad or bread.

Grilled Sides

Then there are side dishes you prepare right on the grill, or nestled into the coals. Most vegetables and fruits, from bell peppers and corn to bananas and cantaloupe, are delicious when seasoned and cooked directly on the grill--or dotted with butter and herbs and wrapped in foil pouches to cook in the hot embers. Another favorite? You can't beat flatbread fresh off the grill.

GrannyNan, I make corn salads all the time with raw corn sliced off the cob. It is the best! Once I found out how great the freshness of the corn improved recipes, I use it all I can. (It really improves corn chowder too.)

I always make home made baked beans with bacon and molasses. Macaroni salad is another we favor when having a large crowd and I grill whole Vidalia onions. You can slit them on the top, four ways but don't cut down all the way. Insert some butter , worcestershire ,salt and pepper and wrap in foil. About twenty minutes ought to cook them through. Awesome with ribs, steak or burgers.

granny nan probably already got your answer but its easier to cut corn off the cob when its cooked, although its not a challenge raw. Cut if off any way you like and but it has to be cooked, raw corn just is not easily digested, nor is it tasty. I prefer to cut mine off the cob when its cooked on the grill so there are some nice carmalization on the kernals then I make my corn salad
