Basil

By:   Allrecipes Staff

Description

Basil, also called sweet basil, is the dried leaves of the herb Ocimum basilicum, a member of the mint family. Basil is a small, bushy plant that grows to about two feet tall. Its botanical name is derived from the Greek, "to be fragrant."

Uses

Basil is used in tomato sauces, pestos, pizzas, and cheeses. It is used in green Thai curry blend, bouquet garni, and Italian seasonings.

Origins

Although basil is cultivated worldwide, Egypt is the principal source, followed by the United States.

Folklore

The early Romans made it a symbol of love and fertility. Through the centuries, it became a custom of young Italian suitors to wear a sprig of basil as a sign of their marital intentions. In India, Hindus believed that if a leaf of basil were buried with them, it would serve as their passport to heaven.

Basil You made me laugh. Where did you get this about Hindus believed that if a leaf of basil were buried with them, it would serve as their passport to heaven. Hindus are cremated, not buried. And there is no such belief that you claim. Believe me, I am as Hindu as on ecan be!

"[Hindus] placed sprigs of Basil on the chests of deceased loved ones to protect them from evil and to provide safe passage into the next life" -Aromatherapy Essentail Oils for Vibrant Health and Beauty by Roberta Wilson p.49 "Some [Hindus] believe that the plant will also deter the agents of Lord Yama, the God of Death. Worshippers of Vishnu believe that by offering basil to the god, they will achieve Mokshya, i.e. they will be free from the cycle of rebirth." -Basil's Usages Both Practical and Spiritual by Rupa Kharel kind of the same thing right?

Hi Kelli - Your references still don't specifically note burial anywhere. Hindu's aren't buried. We are cremated. :)
