Backyard Camping

Get recipes and tips for setting up your backyard campsite!

Warm summer nights and some basic supplies are all you need to make the backyard a great campout destination.

What You Need

  • A tent, or you can make a “fort” out of blue tarps.
  • Sleeping bags or warm blankets and comforters.
  • An inflatable mattress to make things extra-comfy.

    Campfire Food (Campfire Optional!)

A campfire might not be possible in the backyard, but a barbeque always is. Hot dogs and hamburgers are a camping favorite. Or for something a little different, try foil packs. Just layer thin sliced potatoes, vegetables, seasonings, and meat in the foil, wrap, and place over the fire (can be cooked over a campfire or grill). Then, once the main dish is done, don't forget the marshmallows!

Even as an adult in the 60's I enjoy camping out in the back yard. Got to get an air mattress though. Don't forget the adult beverages. A two person tent is great if it is just you and the wife.

My children (aged 9 and 13) camp out most of the year round, with their tent pitched on top of the trampoline! It keeps them off the cold ground and with the aid of four or five large comforters, is quite snuggly too!

My child also pitches his tent on the trampoline. He includes his dog who just goes with the flow. You can't camp without a campfire, hot dogs and smores. The neighborhood kids have starting joining in as well. Fun times for the kids...

I've heard so exciting things about Amish Potatoe Salad, hard to find. Bought my grandson some, he said it was awesome to anybody's appetite. Ask him to save me some. Never tasted it.
