After-School Snack Attack

By:   Vanessa Greaves

Just because the last school bell rang it doesn't mean the day is over for your kids. There's homework or sports or any number of enterprises to get through before they sit down for a square meal. In the meantime, they could use a snack.

Kids need to be well-fueled through the afternoon to help them perform at their best and help you sidestep those hungry tummy meltdowns. If you're wondering what to feed the little chowhounds to hold them over, go for nutritious homemade snacks--you'll save a lot of money and have more control over the amount of sugar, fat, salt, and preservatives your kids consume.

On-the-Go Snacks

It's not unusual for students to be fully booked for several hours after school. Be sure their backpacks are well-supplied with snacks that travel well and don’t have to be refrigerated. Hint: keep nuts and dried fruit in your cupboard for a quick and easy trail mix.

Refrigerator Snacks

Sometimes kids need more substantial mini meals. Keep these simple salads in the fridge and let the kids help themselves.

Anything to make afterschool easier!! These sound great. Especially the cinnamon raisin spread and the hummus.
