Where Does the Name “Cocktail” Come From?
Well, no one knows for sure. So take your pick from several theories:
- It was named after the eggcup-shaped drinking vessels (coquetier in French), in which the first Sazeracs were served.
- “Cock-tail” was the nickname for a mixed-breed horse. And the original “cock-tail” was a mix of bitters and booze with a little sugar.
- They were originally a morning drink, made to bring you back to life, and “cocktail” was a metaphor for the rooster crowing the hanging person back to the bar in the a.m.
- They were originally stirred or garnished with a rooster tail.
