Oak Harbor, Washington

Known for Deception Pass and the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Oak Harbor was settled by Dutch farmers, and still retains much of that small town heritage. Though made more suburban by the influx of the naval community, much of Oak Harbor is still surrounded by farms, and there are a surprising number of roadside produce and fruit stands available during the summer. Deception Pass State Park, situated at the very north end of the island, is the largest tourist attraction in the area, with more than 2 million visitors per year. The views from the park and the bridge are quite extraordinary, and well worth the traffic in summertime. The local Dutch heritage creates a strange mix with the Naval Air Station—one local park features both a windmill and a navy jet. At the yearly “Holland Happening” festival, the navy’s presence is felt through some of the international cuisine available, as lumpia and adobo from the Philippines can be found alongside Dutch cookies such as stroopwafels and speculaas.

Loved it! I used only half the amount of cream cheese though.

Delicious Chicken Casserole

Reviewed on Nov. 19, 2009 by Melissa
This is one of my family's new favorite recipes! My husband LOVES it! This recipe is one where anything goes. Have leftover chicken or rice you have to use up? You don't need exact measurements! I've added more or less chicken, rice, celery, sour cream, and/or crackers than the recipe calls for, and it still turns out terrific every time! I've made it for potlucks, company, and just for us, and I've had people begging me for the recipe or asking for more. If you're searching for a fantastic potluck casserole, or a comfort food to prepare for those cold winter nights, this is it!

Oliebollen (Dutch Doughnuts)

I just finished making my first batch and it was just yum yum. I added two tablespoons of white sugar to the milk and yeast. We love apples in ours and we used a tart apple.
