Oak Harbor, Washington

Known for Deception Pass and the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Oak Harbor was settled by Dutch farmers, and still retains much of that small town heritage. Though made more suburban by the influx of the naval community, much of Oak Harbor is still surrounded by farms, and there are a surprising number of roadside produce and fruit stands available during the summer. Deception Pass State Park, situated at the very north end of the island, is the largest tourist attraction in the area, with more than 2 million visitors per year. The views from the park and the bridge are quite extraordinary, and well worth the traffic in summertime. The local Dutch heritage creates a strange mix with the Naval Air Station—one local park features both a windmill and a navy jet. At the yearly “Holland Happening” festival, the navy’s presence is felt through some of the international cuisine available, as lumpia and adobo from the Philippines can be found alongside Dutch cookies such as stroopwafels and speculaas.

Dorsey's Fish & Oyster House Crab Cakes

Reviewed on Oct. 14, 2007 by Veronica T
My family absolutely loves these crab cakes. It compliments the unique taste that Dungeness crab has, and doesn't mask the flavor of the crab. A very useful way to take care of any left-over crab or fish.

Golden Dinner Rolls

Reviewed on Sep. 30, 2007 by Timberweave
I am not the world's bes baker by any means. However, these rolls were easy to prepare, and quick. A last minute idea which will be a perfect cap to a family dinner. I did cut the recipe down, due to the amount needed, but, they still turned out great.
