Hawaii

The 50th and final state admitted into the Union, Hawaii is a series of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is the furthest south of any U.S. state, further south than the Florida Keys, on roughly the same latitude as Cuba. The first human arrivals to the islands appeared more than 1,000 years ago, having island hopped from Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Polynesians brought pigs and chickens. In the 18th Century, Captain Cook brought cows, goats, and horses. Edible plants like taro, sweet potato, coconut, pineapples, and sugarcane were all brought to the islands to be cultivated in the rich volcanic soils. Today, Hawaii is known for growing coffee, macadamia nuts (originally from Australia), sweet Maui onions, pineapples, Ahi tuna, and sugar cane. But perhaps Hawaii is best known for the luau, a traditional feast that centers on the roasted pig, which is buried in the ground and cooked slowly over white-hot stones.

Mark's English Sausage Rolls

Reviewed on Nov. 25, 2009 by Jennifer_Marsland
This is a great base recipe. I added some sage, salt and pepper. I also added about 1/8th of an onion and 2 carrots micrograted into the mix. The carrots and onions added a nice but very mild sweetness to it. They turned out great!

Grandma Ople's Apple Pie

Reviewed on Nov. 23, 2009 by Royall
Wonderful pie! I like apple pie but this was over the top with great and interesting flavors. You should try this recipe at least once as its written before you add anything "extras" to it. I didn't do the lattice top as I was using the "Never Fail Pie Crust II" from this site. It was too soft to try the pretty crust. I'll just have to learn to make a "real" pie crust!

Easy Ham and Cheese Appetizer Sandwiches

Reviewed on Nov. 23, 2009 by lalynnhussey
This was delicious! The first batch, I spread the butter mixture kind of light, and there wasn't enough zip for the whole sandwich. I like the zip. So my next batch that I will be making shortly, I'll add to the top and bottom of the rolls. I know my husband will love these!!
