Apple Raisin Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2009
Very good. I halved the recipe and still got two medium sized loafs. Followed the recipe to a T, an it was well received by my family. Added more apples than called for and omitted the glaze.

Oatmeal Applesauce Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2009
I made these as rolls instead of as a loaf. Amazing! They were soft, light brown colored, and had a slight oaty taste. My mom loved them. I would make them again. I think I subbed the dry milk powder for 3 tablespoons of milk without any problems.

Cappuccino Flats

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2009
My Mom thought they tasted professional - the type you would package and give as gifts. They were very professional looking and presentable. I prefer softer cookies. You can definitely taste the coffee flavor.

Bread Machine Calzone

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2009
Delicious, and surprisingly easy. The braiding is a little tricky, as the directions are somewhat vague. Basically, after heaping the mixture in a line down the center, use a sharp knife to cut downward diagonally angled "flaps". Like this: (right side) //////// (middle) ----- (left side) \\\\\\\\ Then overlap each side, and tuck in the ends. At least that is how I went about it and it turned out nicely. I subbed 1 tablespoon of actual milk for the powdered; didn't throw off the recipe, despite the extra liquid. I also added another teaspoon of sugar.

Winter Squash Rolls

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2009
Good! Very tasty, moist, and they have a very deep golden color. With the butternut squash, I put it in the microwave (covered) for several minutes, and then just pulled off the skin. Be sure to rotate it if you microvwave it. Also makes it softer and easier to cut. Boiling gets you the same result.

Beet, Walnut and Prune Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2009
Not bad. I omitted the prunes because other reviewers said that was the more authentic route. It tasted like...beets. Nice combination, and quite easy. It was my first time using beets, & peeling & grating them was very easy. This is a vibrantly colored dish, which could be very suitable for entertainment purposes. My mom liked it; Dad didn't. I used 3 beets, 2 garlice cloves, and 1/3 cup of the walnuts and 1/3 cup mayonnaise. Nice mixture.

Excellent and Healthy Cornbread

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2009
Very good. I used vanilla flavored yogurt and thought this was a great, healthier version of cornbread. Would make again. It doesn't make as thick of cornbread as I had expected.

Ziti with Italian Sausage

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2009
I halved the recipe, used fresh mushrooms, and used onion powder for garlic powder as recommended by others. I made it the day before cooking, and the mushrooms turned the ziti black and made it look like the ziti was molded. Grossed people out, so don't make this dish too much ahead of time. The bad presentation aspect is not worth a melded flavor.

Peppermint Patty Brownies

Quite good. I used Junior Mints for half and Andes Mints for the other half. It didn't spread as evenly as desired, but the taste was scrumptious. I would recommend using Junior Mints. Gives a nice, gooey filling.

Turtle Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2009
Instructions were clear and the bread tasted great. Perfect for entertaining - wow them without the work. As easy as making bread rolls. I used an egg wash to coat the shell, which helped make it shiny and brown to distinguish it from the body. One day I'm tempted to add green food coloring for amusement's sake.

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2009
I wasn't impressed with this. I might have overcooked it a bit, but regardless, it just lacked a very tasty flavor. As other reviewers recommended, I omitted the salt, added a dash of nutmeg to the ricotta mixture, and let its flavors meld in the fridge before cooking. I also soaked the raw, hard noodles in a bowl of hot tap water for 20-30 minutes instead of boiling them.

Pumpkin Cheesecake II

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2009
Sooooo delicious. Make sure to bring all ingredients to room temperature before using them (to prevent future cracking) and use a water bath in the oven. 1) I used ground walnuts for the crust 2)I added more pumpkin than called for. 3) I ommited the lemon extract 4) Used another reviewer's recommendation for a glaze: Simmer 1 cup whipping cream with 3/4 cup real maple syrup for about 20 min; stir in 1/2 cup chopped pecans and chill. The glaze is a must. However, it does not "look" pretty b/c the chopped pecans are gloopy, so weigh the extraordinary taste of the pecans against the aesthetic presentation concerns.

Good, but needs some zip. Might add some cajun seasoning to the crab next time. Would be the perfect addition to add some zip.

Sweet Russian Cabbage Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2008
MMMMM. I liked this - a bit too sweet. I would cut back on the sugar next time. I 1.5 x the recipe, descreased the onions, and it turned out fine. I would also add more cabbage and less beef. VERY flavorful.

Golden Pumpkin Rolls

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2008
I liked these, but most of my family didn't. My twin loved them - they remind me of what we call "chinese hamburgers" - dim sum rolls with meat filling served at chinese bakeries (but without the meat filling). I threw in more pumpkin than called for and you can definitely taste it. Might make again.

Holiday Peppermint Bark

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2008
Simple, easy, tasty, and looks as though it is difficult to make. Great for entertaining. I would partition or at least indent the chocolate before it cools, because if not, it tends to break unevenly & is difficult to make presentable and uniform.

Chocolate Turtle Cheesecake I

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2008
I didn't have any caramels on hand so I substituted ice cream caramel fudge sauce. Don't do this - it makes it too sticky and difficult to cut. I omitted the pecans. This cheesecake looks very pretty and has a smooth, rich texture. I used swirled caramel in the shape of a spiral on the top. Be sure to bring the cream cheese and eggs to room temperature to prevent your cheesecake from cracking. I would make again if entertaining.

Tasty, easy, and would make again. I used 12 chicken thighs. I doubled the recipe, and adapted the recipe pursuant to the recommendations of other reviewers: 1) Halved the ketchup. 2) Substituted garlic powder for onion powder. I also used half dijon mustard/half normal. Very yummy!

Cheddar Batter Bread

I used my bread machine and the bread didn't properly rise (it fell in the middle). Taste-wise, it was ok; my sister viewed thought it tasted like normal store bread. Good toasted though.
