Denver, Colorado

“Thar’s gold in them thar hills! Pike’s Peak or Bust” More hype than actuality as it turned out, the slogan drew fortune seekers to Denver environs in 1858 and many stayed. Forged on the eastern slope of the Rockies, the city grew as a supply center for westward-bound wagon trains. The railroad’s arrival in 1870 brought another wave of settlers, plus grist mills for western wheat and numerous stockyards. Today, a skyline of modern office towers marks Denver as the Rocky Mountain region’s principle commercial, financial, and industrial hub. Food traditions in the mile-high city reflect its diverse population and frontier town history, from hearty cuts of beef to buffalo steaks. Teeming with baristas, drive-throughs, brewpubs, pork mains, superb Tex-Mex fare, Asian restaurants, sandwiches (maybe the Denver or Western omelet/sandwich was invented here, although food historians wonder), and barbeque, of course, Denver offers an all-American feast.

Jamie's Minestrone

Reviewed on Dec. 7, 2009 by DaveinDenver
I substituted garbonzo beans for kidney, left out the green beans, used canned diced Italian style tomatoes because I wanted the chunks, added 1 lb. of Italian sausage and used less zucchini (2) but did the rest according to the author. I also used about 6 cups of chicken broth which seemed about right. Amazing minestrone!

Chili I

I have to say I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be given the other ratings/reviews. I am not sure if I will make it again, I have a different recipe I like much better. However, I definitely think the sugar would need to be cut back it seemed a little sweet. My husband liked it ok, but I just didn't enjoy the flavor.

Favorite Old Fashioned Gingerbread

Reviewed on Dec. 4, 2009 by DaveinDenver
I doubled the spices and per another reviewers suggestions did 2 things differently. I added 1/2 cup of applesauce and it was plenty moist, and I checked it at about 40 minutes and it was done. 1 full hour and it would have overcooked. Holds together well, very tender and has a beautiful gingerbread flavor. Almost forgot, I did add 1/2 teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg as was suggested so make that 3 things.
