Grilled Brown Sugar Pork Chops

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2009
This was delicious. Because of other reviews saying it was too sweet, I cut the brown sugar by about half and it was the perfect amount of sweetness for us. (If you're a fan of sweet, go ahead and use it all, though - I don't think it would be too much.) In the cornstarch/ water mixture, I substituted 1/4 c. of the water for 1/4 c. of bourbon to give it an interesting flavor. All the alcohol cooked out, so it was okay for the kiddos. I served it with roasted sweet potatoes and steamed broccoflower and the supper was a hit for our family.

Sun-dried Tomatoes I

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2008
These are great! I used roma tomatoes and we were all eating these right off the pan. I sprinkled some basil over one batch before drying them and that gave them a nice flavor, but they're great plain, too. I'll definitely be planting more roma plants next year to make more of these treats.

Honey Glazed Pork Tenderloin

Reviewed: May 7, 2008
My whole family, and my boss' family loved this recipe! I had to work all day so I wasn't able to cook it in a roaster for 2 hours. Instead, I put it in the crock pot while I was at work. Talk about tasty and tender! The meat also made great sandwiches the next day for lunch!

Glazed Ham

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2008
Made this for my Easter ham this year and I know I'll be keeping the recipe to use every year. Delicious! We couldn't stop eating it. The only down side was burning my fingers while trying to debone the ham. I ended up using two forks and that worked great, but I still burned myself trying to pick the fat out. All in all, a few burned fingertips were worth it. I can't wait to have the leftovers tonight. Like other reviewers, I used a fully cooked ham, and it was still delicious. I was worried that it would dry out, but it was very moist. Great recipe!

Refried Beans Without the Refry

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2008
Finally - a great, flavorful refried beans recipe! This one isn't bland or gloppy. These are great as a side or for bean burritos or as a base for bean dip. They're yummy and quite simple. I've been looking for ways to cut down on the canned foods that we eat to be healthier, and this is a great way to do just that. Thanks for a great recipe!

Breakfast Upside Down Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2007
This turned out really pretty. I used the parchment paper and when I turned it out, it worked perfectly. I used leftover Easter ham, which turned out really good, but I can see that bacon would be good, too. Next time I'll either use hash browns or shred the potatoes and I'll use more onions as I felt that the potatoes overwhelmed the rest of the dish. It was very filling with the amount of potatoes, but it needed a bit more flavor in the potatoes part. Great recipe, though!

French Toast I

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2007
Good recipe. I used homemade bread and served with apple syrup and my family loved it. If your bread is turning out soggy, lower the heat a bit so that the inside has more time to dry out before the outside gets overdone. Also, try using whole milk or 2% instead of skim as skim is thinner.

San Francisco Sourdough Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2007
Since I made this on a rainy day, I allowed for two rises before forming it into loaves. It turned out very good, but not very "sour" tasting, like other reviewers stated. Like other reviewers, my starter is new, so I'm hoping with age the flavor will come out. I braided one loaf and the other just left on a baking sheet in the shape of a loaf. The braided one turned out very pretty and golden with the egg wash. One question - I thought the purpose of a starter was to not have to use yeast. Is this not the case? Anyway, this was a very good recipe and made the house smell wonderful on a gloomy day. I look forward to trying it again with a more mature starter.

Sweet Dinner Rolls

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2006
Loved these rolls. I cut down a bit on the sugar, but they were still plenty sweet for dinner rolls. They were also beautiful. I can't wait to try these as cinnamon rolls, or other types of rolls. I also don't have a bread machine, so I just let the yeast sit in the water with a bit of the sugar for a few minutes, then added the rest of the wet ingredients, then mixed in the dry.

Corn Tortilla Chips

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2006
I've tried these baked and fried and they're great either way. If you bake them, they'll probably be soft the next day, but just toss them back in the oven to toast them back up. We don't live in the U.S. and can't get tortillas here, so these were especially yummy. Probably if we lived in the States, I would just buy chips at the store, but these are great - very Mexican restaurant-tasting!

Corn Tortillas

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2006
Since we can't get corn tortillas here, I was severely missing them and was thrilled to find this recipe. After much waiting for a friend to mail me some masa harina from the States, we were thrilled with these tortillas! They do require a good bit of work, but they're yummy! You can also fry them up or spray them with cooking oil to make tortilla chips. Thanks for giving me corn tortillas!

Blackened Tilapia with Secret Hobo Spices

I don't know if maybe some of my spices are extra hot (we don't live in the US), but I couldn't even eat this and we LOVE hot foods. My husband ate some and said it had a good flavor if you could get past all the heat, but that it was way too hot, even for him.
