Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2007
I have made this pie three times: once a few years ago, and twice this month. The first one was excellent. The second one was way too runny. Even after the pie sat for a day, the filling was running all over when you cut a slice. I followed the advice of another reviewer and added cornstarch to the third one and eliminated the water and I think that did the trick. I latticed the crust and poured the topping over, next time I will toss the apples in the topping and save enough to brush over the top. It will be much easier and cleaner that way.

pretty good chili, i replaced the tomoatoes with salsa. it was a tad bit spicy, if i did it that way again I would reduce the cayenne. Very easy and fast though!

These just weren't that great. I followed the recipe exactly. The meat was very dry and chewy. Maybe they should be cooked in a slow cooker?

BUSH'S® All-American Chili

Pretty good. I replaced the can of tomatoes with a jar of Trader Joes salsa. It was a tad bit on the spicy side, but consistency was great. Next time, I'll reduce the chili powder if I use salsa.

Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes

Wow!!! These were excellent. I think they may even go in the holiday recipe box! Next time, I may mix the cheese mix in with all the potatoes instead of just pouring on top. Also, you need a little bit bigger casserole dish than a 1 qt.

I don't know how I didn't end up with a five star cake! I followed the recipe exactly, except I took it out of the oven five mins early. The cake was not very moist and the icing was way too sweet.

The flavor of this was awesome, but I will reduce cooking time in the future. I used 5lbs of chicken parts, and it was not as juicy as I'd like. BUT...it was not dry! I will try again.

Very good. My first ever successful homemade cookie. Added a bit more powdered sugar to the cookie mix and put the crushed candy cane in the final dusting. They taste great.

Carne Guisada III

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2007
I tried this recipe in the crock pot, and followed directions to the letter. I think my crock pot is on the large side, and I added water to cover the meat. I think it turned out a bit watery. I had never had "carne guisada" and wanted to try a new recipe for my Puerto Rican husband. It tastes like the good ol American version of beef stew, in my opinion.

Hearty Turkey Soup with Parsley Dumplings

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2007
Hmmm..I was really excited about this recipe, but I can only give it 3 stars. For starters, you need a bigger stock pot than 4 qts! I don't really understand the need to mix milk and the flour together to mix into soup. It didn't thicken the soup, in my opinion just clouded it! I think it had a bit too much pepper, and I messed up the dumplings. They were too doughy! However, I could still taste some goodness through it all. I will try this again...and maybe make a few changes.

Excellent beans. I have been trying to find a good, authentic recipe for my Puerto Rican husband and did not want to use anymore Goya sofrito! These beans tasted so fresh and the flavor was out of this world. I doubled the recipe and it was amazing. I used fivebrigs recipe for the sofrito also.

Sofrito

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2007
Delicious! The kitchen smelled wonderful while I was preparing this. I opened up a jar of store-bought sofrito just to compare the aroma~ the homemade stuff smelled incredible next to the jar. I used this in Fivebrigs recipe for habichuelas and puerto rican rice. Excellent!***a quick update. I just used some of the sofrito that I froze, and i do not find the flavor nearly as robust as the fresh!
