Vermont

Vermont was a French possession until 1763 when it became a British colony, one of the original thirteen. French Canadians, along with English, Irish, and Scots, were the first Europeans to settle the Green Mountain State. Incidentally, “green mountain” is montagne verte in French. Hence, Vermont. Vermont is the only New England state without access to the Atlantic Ocean, but lacking that, Lake Champlain does form a long (and lovely) border with New York to the west. Vermont is known for its maple syrup and its cheese and dairy industry. The sugar maple is Vermont’s state tree. The brook trout (a cool-water stream fish) and the walleye pike (a warm-water lake fish) share the title of state fish. The apple has earned dual honors, being named Vermont’s state fruit while also receiving props for being the key ingredient in the state pie. To eat apple pie in the true Vermont style, don’t forget a nice slice of Cheddar and a scoop of Vermont vanilla ice cream. A classic accompaniment to Vermont Cheddar are the common crackers sold at country stores. Sample them crushed over a bowl New England clam chowder, as well.

About me:
Hey everyone, good to be here! I'm a Jersey boy who grew up in Vermont and now lives in Colorado. I have been into cooking since I was about 10. I helped my mom with her catering business until I was about 19. I then joined the military and learned to develop my own style of cooking, as I was no longer under my boss's (mom) supervision. I became very interested in Italian/seafood/and grilling. Although I enjoy just about anything that involves being in the kitchen. Today I enjoy cooking more than ever. To me, there is nothing better than spending a few hours outside, enjoying the outdoors with a beer, cigar, and a REALLY big grill.

Golden Rum Cake

Reviewed on Nov. 11, 2009 by cathy a.
WOOOOW! Followed cake and rum glaze to the "T"! Poked holes in the cake after cooling for ten minutes as recommended by others, and then poured rum glaze over. Allow to soak in and transfer to a plate. I made a glaze with approx one cup of powdered sugar, couple tablespoons of water, tablespoon of rum, drop of almond extract, and enough corn syrup to thicken and harden when drizzled onto cake. Yummy!!!

Incredibly easy and incredibly flavorful. I made the chicken, removed it, then made the sauce in the same pan. Saved dishes in the long run. Wonderful!
