Almond Paste

This recipe is for those of you who wish to make your own almond paste. I prefer making my own. When I feel lazy, I purchase it in specialty stores. Rose water can be purchased in Middle Eastern stores, or maybe even health food stores.

Made ahead, a bowl of this salad would make a well-rounded lunch, or dinner for one of those too-busy-to-cook nights. The crunchiness of the broccoli, sunflower seeds and crisp crumbled bacon make the perfect foil for the mayonnaise-based dressing.

Bacon sure does something wonderful for broccoli, and that 's the case with this great party salad. It 's fried up and crumbled and sprinkled on the fresh broccoli along with toasted sunflower seeds. Onions and raisins, also make an appearance.

When your favorite apple is in season, pick up a bunch and make this luscious pie filling that freezes beautifully. Sliced apples are partially cooked on top of the stove with water, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg. Then they 're ladled into containers and frozen. You 'll have enough for five 9-inch pies.
