Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2007
Delicious, delicious, delicious! I was nervous about using Granny Smiths for this recipe, but thought I'd give it a whirl. They were the perfect match for the delicious syrup you make to coat the apples and they were the perfect firmness when the pie was done and cooled. I also mixed the apples and the syrup before putting them in the crust and reserved some to syrup to brush over the lattice top. I used Grandma's Secret Pie Crust from this site and, aside from some difficulty rolling out the dough, it a great pairing with this recipe. Everyone loved the pie! Great recipe -- Thanks for sharing!

Clone of a Cinnabon

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2007
Wow! That's all I can say. Just plain delicious. I made these ahead of time to bring to my in laws for Thanksgiving morning. My only regret it that I couldn't serve them fresh baked and warm out of the oven. They were heavenly and everyone loved them, just as they are. Bravo!

Grandma's Secret Pie Crust

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2007
This was my first attempt at making homemade pie crust by myself, so maybe that has something to do with the difficulty I had working with it. It was difficult to roll out and almost impossible to maneuver into the pie plate. I did a lattice top and it was pretty brittle and I had to be very careful with it. I was skeptical of how it was going to turn out, but boy was I surprised. It was delicious and very flaky! Everyone loved it. I will definitely make it again, but read the reviews of this recipe again to see if anyone has some tips on making it easier to handle. This crust was awesome with Grandma Ople's Apple Pie recipe from this site.

Mushroom Rice Pilaf

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2007
Very good and very easy! Make exactly as the recipe reads, except I used fresh mushrooms and added about one stalk of celery and about a 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic. Without asking him, my hubby said, "By the way, this is GOOD -- You can make this anytime!" I may try to make it with chicken broth next time for a more real chicken taste. Served this along side some salmon with a honey mustard glaze and it was excellent. This pilaf would be great along side just about any kind of meat.

Italian Dressing Mix

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2007
Fantastic idea and great recipe! I've gotten tired of paying so much for store-bought dressings, some of them with a lot of high fructose corn syrup. I was looking for a dressing that is easy enough to whip up before a meal and found this one. Better yet -- Now I have a delicious mix of herbs and spices that I just need to add a few ingredients to. As recommended by several reviewers, I reduced the salt by about half and I'm glad I did. Thanks for the great recipe! We will be using this often!

Sugar Cookie Icing

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2007
I like the concept of this recipe, but need to make it again to do some tweaking. When I made the icing, I felt like I just kept adding and adding and adding the corn syrup and milk because it was so dry. If you have the same experience I did, make sure to adjust the almond extract accordingly, if you like almond flavor. I did end up adding more, but it wasn't nearly enough. My icing never really completely dried all the way through, but maybe it was too liquidy? The outside did dry though and the result was, as other reviews have said, beautiful, shiny and colorful cookies. Will definitely keep working with the recipe to make it work.

Easy Pizza Sauce III

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2007
What a simple and delicious sauce! I made the sauce as listed in the recipe, except I did 2 tsp. each of oregano and basil and 1/2 tsp of sugar as another reviewer suggested. So tasty! I make homemade pizza every week. I make and freeze in batches my own pizza sauce that is so much more time consuming to make. This sauce may replace the one I usually make because its so simple and delicious. Otherwise, I may end up making this one, freezing it like my other sauce and alternating.

Slow Cooker Swiss Steak

Reviewed: Oct. 14, 2007
Very tasty! I agree with one reviewer that said this was more like a beef stew. I just put all the ingredients in the slow cooker (no pre-cooking) and cooked it for about 6 hours on high. Perfect! I did add some extra peppers, some mushrooms, garlic and a touch of basil, oregano and chili powder. Delicious with mashed potatoes. I like the suggestion of adding a can of cream of mushroom soup and may try that next time.

Stuffed Peppers

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2007
Excellent, basic recipe! I used lean ground beef and divided the mixture between 4 peppers. Paired with a green salad, this was an easy, filling meal. This one is a regular on our menu!

Slow-Cooked Steak Fajitas

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2007
These were a hit! Great combination of seasonings. We also skipped the cornstarch step and just drained the juices off after cooking. I put all the ingredients in the slow cooker and cooked for about 6 hours on high. This was plenty of time. Leftovers were tasty! My husband even tried the filling on a roll with a little mayo and said it was fantastic.

Skewered Grilled Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2007
Words cannot describe how awesome these potatoes were! What a simple marinade, but so much flavor! I was skeptical about how partially cooking the potatoes in the microwave and then grilling them later would be. Fantastic texture -- they were tender and creamy with just a little crispness on the outside. Will make over and over again!

Jalapeno Grilled Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2007
This dish was just so-so. I can't put my finger on it, but it really seemed like it needed something else. The rosemary was overwhelming to both my husband and I. We actually ended up removing the seasoning and dipping it in BBQ sauce instead. Wouldn't make again.
