Pumpkin Cookies I

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2005
The first time I made these cookies, they didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I had to whip the butter and sugar in a mixmaster (as opposed to creaming them by hand) to get an appropriate texture.

Pumpkin Bars I

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2005
The recipe makes a good cake, but it's far too soft to use as bars.

Paprika Chicken

I had to triple the paprika and use four cloves of real garlic (not powder!) to make it taste seasoned.

Cranberry Meatballs

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2005
I made this for a Christmas party a couple of years ago, and had numerous requests for the recipe! I am about to make it again for a potluck, and am going to take the recipe along with me, as I am sure I will have requests again! Easy to make, and you can substitute pre-made meatballs into the sauce for a quick fix! OK, so I tried using pre-made meatballs, and it was a failure... I needed a big batch, so used some pre-made and some homemade, and everyone fished around for the homemade!

Sarge's EZ Pulled Pork BBQ

Very bland, leaves pork dry and unpalatable. Needs a major dose of spices (at least three or four) to make it edible.

Cinnamon Cookies II

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2005
A very good cookie recipe. I replaced the white sugar with turbinado sugar and eliminated the molasses, and the result is even better than the original recipe. Much more cinnamony without that molasses taste.

Kristy's Lasagna

Reviewed: Jul. 25, 2005
As other members have pointed out, five tablespoons is far, far too much Italian seasoning *unless* you use the cheapy-cheapy bulk seasoning that's been sitting around for two years at Wally World. Besides that, the recipe is quite bland. I would suggest adding some dried hot pepper flakes, fresh grated Romano cheese, perhaps replacing the ground beef with either sausage or with ground pork, and adding some vegetables such as mushrooms or red peppers. As is, it's a very bland, over-herbed, under-spiced, dull recipe.

Indian Naan II

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2005
These turned out quite well. The addition of yogurt to the mix gave the naans a tangy taste that other recipes don't have. I found that it was important to preheat the grill for at least 10 minutes before attempting to cook the breads, and not to use a silverstone-coated baking sheet (the intense heat may damage it). By the way, kalonji is known better in the West as nigella, but may also be found at German delis either as 'black caraway' or 'schwarzkummel', or in Jewish delis as 'charnushka'.

Curried Stew with Lamb

The yogurt curdles during the cooking process, the spices are too assertive, and the finished recipe is a liquid clumpy mess. Definitely not recommended.

Wow is this ever good! I cheated and used a 10 pound turkey instead of a chicken (it's what I had) and doubled the rest of the ingredients, but it turned out delicious, probably better than with chicken.

Swedish Cured Pork Loin

Reviewed: May 19, 2005
This was delicious! Not too sweet or too salty, and the flavour was out of this world. I wonder if previous reviewers remembered to completely rinse all the rub off the roast before baking, because that's the only way I can see the sugar or salt taste being strong enough to be disagreeable.

Apple-Cran-Cherry Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: May 19, 2005
I increased the amount of cardamom to 1/2 tsp, replaced the cinnamon with 1/2 tsp allspice and 1/2 tsp nutmeg, added 1/2 cup extra flour, and let the mixture sit overnight in the fridge. (I added the extra flour because my homemade applesauce was a bit thin.) The cookies turned out very tasty and were a big hit. The cardamom really does make a difference; if you can't get it at your local supermarket, it can be ordered from online spice stores. It's really worth it. I'll probably make these again if I have kids coming over, but next time I'll chop the dried cherries and cranberries before adding them to make a more even mixture. I'll also bake the cookies at a slightly lower temperature for a longer period of time, since even with the extra flour they're still a bit soft.
