Southern Mushroom Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2006
Rich, satisfying and comforting! This soup is really quite good and simple enough to make. I did add three small chopped shallots in place of regular onions and slightly sauted them with the mushrooms before adding the chicken stock, but other than that, I followed the recipe and I thought it was really good. I am curious though about the "Southern" part. Maybe the buttered toast and cheese on top makes it Southern? In any case, it's for sure worth trying at least once! Thanks for sharing!

Tzatziki Sauce II

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2006
This sauce is fantastic! It is way closer to authentic tasting tzatziki sauce then any of the sauces that call for dill instead of mint. This was absolutely perfect. Rather then shredding the cucumbers though I minced them (personal preference).

Cheesy Ham and Hash Brown Casserole

Yum! Comfort food at its best! I didn't have any sharp Cheddar on hand so I used a bag of already shredded Tex Mex style cheese but it still tasted wonderful! I wasn't sure if my kids would eat this or not but they did and they really liked it. Very comforting dish! Thanks!

Cinnamon-Roasted Almonds

These are great! The only two things I did differently was to add extra vanilla and I used both white and brown sugar...they were yummy! Everyone who tried them loved them. The second time I made them I used half almonds half pecans and they were still great!

Awesome Korean Steak

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2006
This is a wonderful recipe! For those who find the saltiness of the soy sauce a bit too much, darker (Chinese) rather then the lighter (Japanese) soy sauce packs tons of flavor without the intense saltiness of the Japanese varieties. The meat will have a darker appearance after marinating in darker soy sauce, but it won't be as salty. My family and I enjoy this recipe at least once a month. It is truly delcious!

My kids LOVE this pasta salad! It's tasty and simple to prepare. Sometimes I substitute fusilli noodles for the shells. Thanks!

Texas Ranch Potato Salad

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2006
This was pretty good, although I thought it lacked flavor. We barbecued some steaks and had the buffalo shrimp recipe from this site last night. I made this potato salad to go alongside and while it was good, it wasn't great. I'll make it again for sure, but next time I think I'll add some celery, radish and maybe even a little tomato. This recipe is definitely worth trying at least once. It can always be adjusted to suit individual taste. Thanks for sharing it 8Break!

Buffalo Shrimp

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2006
This recipe rocks! The batter is delish and not too spicy at all. Most of the heat is in the sauce so I served it on the side as a dipping sauce. The batter was nice and crispy and with the sauce on the side everyone was able to enjoy it both ways. It was yummy! I couldn't find any fresh shrimp at the market so I bought pre-cleaned frozen jumbo prawns and just thawed them on their skewers for 20 minutes. I took them off the skewers and made them according to the recipe. They were wonderful and the best part was I didn't have to clean the shrimp! I made the sauce using Franks Buffalo Hot Sauce and it was great. I bet this recipe would make wicked chicken wings too!

Asian Potato Salad

Reviewed: Mar. 15, 2006
This potato salad is awesome! At first glance it doesn't seem like the combination of ingredients would work, but they actually work beautifully. The bok choy and peppers add crunch, and the soy sauce adds just the right amount of saltiness. I used maple cured bacon which is a little less salty then regular smoked bacon, and it turned out great! I'm a cilantro lover, so I added cilantro according to the recipe however I think that those who don't care for the strong flavor of cilantro could easily substitute parsley and not miss a beat. This is a great recipe and I will be making it again and again. Yum!

All Day Apple Butter

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2006
I was so looking forward to trying this. I usually make a baked apple butter but after seeing this recipe and reading all the rave reviews I thought I'd found a suitable alternative. I'm sorry but I just didn't care for this apple butter at all. The spices overpowered the flavor of the apples and the color was dark and unappealing. I won't be making this again.

Gravy Baked Pork Chops

I made this last week and my family thought it was so so. It was a little bland for my taste but overall it isn't a bad recipe. Comfort food for sure! I will try making this again but next time I'm going to add a little pork seasoning to the meat first.

Savory Garlic Marinated Steaks

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2006
I thought the flavor of this marinade was absolutely wonderful! The steaks were tender and delicious and even the kids gobbled it up. For those of you who don't care for the pungent and stronger flavor of balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar makes a milder but equally delicious substitute.

Broccoli Cheese Bites

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2006
This recipe wasn't awful but it wasn't great. I made it twice, once following the recipe exactly and the second time I substituted fresh broccoli in place of the frozen broccoli. The second time around it was crispy and tasty. The frozen broccoli lacks flavor and leaves you with soft blobs of battered broccoli. The fresh broccoli works much much better.

Robin's Spicy Ribs

Reviewed: Mar. 11, 2006
Spicy is right! Wow! This recipe calls for a good beer, some lemonade or iced-tea on the side! These ribs were pretty good but next time I'll cut down on the red pepper flakes. I found the intensity of the heat almost overpowers the other flavors, but all in all good flavor combination and the ribs were really tasty. Only reason I'm holding back one star is for the reason listed above, but for sure this recipe is worth making and I plan to make it again soon. Thanks Ryan!

Calabrese Style Spaghetti

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2006
This is very good. The only thing I did differently was use the butter to saute the garlic before tossing it with the pasta. I prefer a mellower flavor then you get with raw garlic. Adding a little bit of white onion to the saute adds a little sweetness, too. I found this recipe worked well with Parmesan cheese as well.

Tail Burner Firehouse French Fries

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2006
I thought these were great! After reading the other reviews I only made one small change in that I used less butter than called for, and instead of using little pats, I melted in first, tossed the seasonings in with the butter, and drizzled it on top of the fries before baking. It turned out perfectly. Nothing was soggy or greasy, and the fries crisped up beautifully.
