Qatar

Qatar is a limestone peninsula jutting into the Persian Gulf affixed to Saudi Arabia along its southern border. For centuries the desert interior hosted nomadic tribes; along the coast, people fished and dove for pearls. (Until oil was discovered in 1939, pearls drove the country’s economy). Generally speaking, Qatar’s native cuisine derives from its interior and coastal-dwelling populations—the nomadic Bedouins roasted meats, and the settled townsfolk along the coast prepared fish and seafood. Qatari cuisine has also been influenced by its links to Iran, India, and North Africa. Qatar grows dates, apples and almonds, as well as other fruits and vegetables. Typical fare includes hummus, tabbouleh, spiced lamb or chicken with rice (machbous), and seafood such as lobster, crab, shrimp, kingfish, and red snapper. A typical breakfast might consist of olives, cheese, yoghurt, and, of course, coffee. Arabian coffee is made from a lightly roasted bean, sweetened, spiced with cardamom, and served in tiny cups.

Marinated Flank Steak

This is a version of a recipe I have used for several years. Try adding some rosemary to the marinade. It is always a winner! Great for tough cuts of meat. Also works great with top sirloin. Here's a tip - don't overcook the meat. It tastes wonderful cooked medium rare or medium and serve with some horseradish sauce - YUM! I'm getting hungry.

Decorator Frosting I

A good "old faithful" recipe. If you are leaving the cake on the counter, I used water instead of milk. 1/2 butter, 1/2 crisco works best, with a high quality butter, it takes away the crisco taste. The best way to thin it for flat icing is white corn syrup.

Juicy Roasted Chicken

Very similar to the recipe my mom always used except she put onions and celery in the cavity. Always moist and tender. Guess she got the recipe from my German grandmother. YUMM!
