Both of my parents worked lots, so I have been preparing my own meals for decades now.
I love to cook, especially for my family.
Father of two awesome kids under 10.
Long time employee of allrecipes.com.
My favorite things to cook
Anything on the grill. Always looking for a better recipe for ribs or pulled port. Some of my favorite recipes from this site are:
Spicy Red Bean Soup.
Bacon Wrapped Dates.
Queijadas.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Nearly all my childhood family gatherings were huge pot lucks. Both my grandmothers were awesome cooks, something I never really appreciated until they were gone and I tried to recreate those magic dishes.
My cooking triumphs
Any time I can get a whole meal on the table at the same time , while it's still hot. Turn off the tv, round up the family, not trip over toys in the process.
My cooking tragedies
I've had plenty of things fail on me over the years. Overcooked, Undercooked, Guests at the table eating salad already, entree burned.
One of my first tragic memories of cooking, at about 8 years old I was cooking a hamburger on an electric stove. It was summer time, it was hot, and I was cooking without a shirt on. I flipped a burger into it's own grease and the splatter got me in the chest. Instant burn blisters.
I often find myself cooking for groups of 50 or more people. My biggest cooking fear is inspired by The Death Scene at the end of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life;
"How can we have all died at the same time"
"The Salmon Mousse"
"...to serve salmon with botulism at a dinner party is social death for me."
I stay far away from all canned fish as a result of that.
