My life is a little hectic, especially in the last year. I got married to my husband, Jay on December 31, 2007 and just graduted college in May 2008 with a degree in Social Work. I work with the adult mental health population as a Supported Living Counselor. We just found out in September that we are expecting our first little one :) and couldn't be happier! My mom and (believe it or not) my husband have taught me the most about cooking, and the rest I learn as I go.
My favorite things to cook
I'm somewhat of an adventurous cook. My mom and mother in law are both great cooks but always tend to cook the same things. My husband loves the fact that I try to make something different everyday. I love cajun food (I waitressed in a great Cajun Restaurant for a few years) and pasta dishes. I tend to cook chicken a lot but always try to find a different way to cook it. I also love baking and grilling.
My favorite family cooking traditions
On Holidays we all go to my parents' and my mom cooks all day and plays music. I help her cook and she shows me her secrets, we drink wine and have a great time. I've learned so much from watching my mom in the kitchen.
My cooking triumphs
We go to the outerbanks every year with my family. We rent a house on the bogue and have crabbing nets out. I peeled about 3 dozen crabs and we used flounder that we caught and made stuffed flounder for my family. It was a true seafood feast complete with bacon wrapped scallops, stuffed mushrooms, and plenty other goodies. I can't take all the credit because my husband helped me every step of the way; but my family loved it and I have done it every year since.
My cooking tragedies
I cooked dinner for my husband's family (when we were dating) and I decided to make fried chicken for the first time ever. I double breaded the chicken with bread crumbs and even though I fried it forever, when I served the perfectly browned chicken to the family, his uncle immediately spit it out and screamed "It's Raw!" No one ate it of course, and still to this day, I never made fried chicken again.
