My mom is an amazing cook. I spent many years in the kitchen learning from her. I consider myself a pretty good cook for my age. I like to try new recipes and sometimes I only look at new recipes to give me ideas that I can experiment with.
My favorite things to cook
My husband and I both love hot and spicy dishes! Our favourite desserts are anything made with peanut butter, so I love trying new peanut butter recipes from here. One of our favourite appetizers is deep fried pickles. Unfortunately we haven't seen them in restaurants since we moved from T Bay. They are easy to make though - just quater large pickles and bread them, then put them in the deep fryer till they are golden brown. Make sure you let them cool for a bit before you take a bite! Yum yummmmm
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love Rouladden, it's a family favourite that my husband loved from the start. I don't exactly follow my family's holiday tradition, sorry Mom. It was always seafood Christmas Eve, turkey Christmas day, and ham on New Years Eve. My mom always put out a good spread. I don't follow the tradition because I don't like seafood, and my husband and I eat ham maybe once every 2 years or less. For my family, we only eat turkey Christmas day and as long as there's wine or bubbly on New Years it doesn't matter what we eat :)
My cooking triumphs
I remember the first time I made a big Christmas dinner by myself. I was living with room mates and I was the only one who knew how to cook. We had a couple friends over and I baked my first turkey with stuffing and all the rest. It was a success!
My cooking tragedies
Have you ever over-spiced gravy? I added too much cayene pepper to my gravy once. Now I stay clear of cayene when I make gravy. I learned that gravy is very tastey when kept simple. The natural flavours should only be complimented by the spice and not overwhelmed by it.
