Sip & See

August 18, 2009 my youngest daughter gave birth to an 8"11oz, 20 inches long baby girl. This is my 6th grandchild, only the 2nd girl.  Our other granddaughter is 15, so you know we were all thrilled an over the moon that we had another girl, well everyone but the 15 year old who had liked her status as the only girl.  Saturday, August 8th was my daughter's 30th birthday and we had planned a "Sprinkle" Baby Shower for her on that day.  On Thursday, August 6th, at her Dr's visit, she was told that she would probably have the baby that weekend.  The decision was made to postpone the "Sprinkle".  After all, we didn't want her to go into labor at the shower.  Trying to be prepared, I had already baked and made some of the food.  I froze a little of it but most of it we just had to eat.  Katie, my daughter already had a son, who is three.  Because she already had had a shower for him and she had all the big stuff you need with a baby, we were having a "Sprinkle" instead of "Shower", meaning just bring small gifts.  In some parts of the country and world the custom is for showers for only the first child, which is OK, however (I think), every baby is special and deserving of a celebration of their birth.  So now we have the baby and need a celebration. Hmm? What do I do?  I started looking online for some thing to do.  Tea? Luncheon? Couples? and I found it! The perfect idea! "Sip & See"!  It states that a Sip & See is a lovely, old Southern tradition, (Now I was born in GA and lived here all my life and I had never heard of such a tradition!) where people come and "Sip" some beverages and "See" the baby. Sounds good to me.  "Sip & See's" can be used for other things to like for a visiting relative, to celebrate an engagement, or even as a kind of house warming party. From the description, it can be as formal or as laid back as you like.  The main requirements seem to be that there be something to "Sip" (alcoholic or not) and some thing to "See."  It has even been used for girls to get together to "See" the new boyfriend! (Also, called a "Meet & Greet.")  Another us mentioned, is another excuse for the bride to be to have a gathering by having people come in to "See" all the wedding gifts. It can be held Open House Style. Wow!  I like this idea.  It's  a great way for friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors to come meet the new baby.  A little etiquette for the day... it's probably a good idea to set up a "wash" station, so guests can be sure to clean their hands before holding the new baby. Again, this is not a stock up on baby good's type of shower, but it's almost unheard of to show up to a celebratory event empty-handed.  This day is meant to be about the new mom and sweet new baby. You do not have to have games, or a structured schedule of events... just yummy drinks, light refreshments, good conversation, and a chance to hold the new baby girl. I had already bought and planed to play "The Price is Right~ Baby Edition".  So I am still going to do that. I had a menu already planned, which I am still sticking to, mostly:

"Sip & See" Menu

Sandwiches:   Chicken Salad on Mini Croissants
Cucumber Spread on Rounds
Pineapple 1/2 Circles

Godiva Brownies (?)

What a great name for a wonderful event. It doesn't surprise me, that this is a lovely old fashioned Southern tradition. One that should be resurrected. As far as menu, I think I would skip the tuna. Don't get me wrong, I love tuna, but sometimes the smell can be a bit overpowering. With the other items you have, it's a wonderful assortment of goodies. Love the ham on brown sugar bread idea. I also can't wait for you to post pictures of the party. The cookies sound like a very cute idea. She will be thrilled. And, congratulations Gramma!

Congratulations on your new grandaughter! Your menu looks delicious!

I have changes the tuna on the menu to homemade pimento cheese sandwichs. Better, I think.

I agree with the change to Pimento cheese. The one thing that came to my mind is to serve some of the chicken salad in nice lettuce leaves. It looks lovely and good for those that may be watching there weight. I like doing this because it can be done early and you don't have to worry about the bread getting soggy

I love the idea of a Sip & See. A baby celebration and a chance to build a loving supportive community for the family. I also love that Grammy is doing all the work so that the mother can just relax and enjoy time with the special people in her life.

Its neat to have any excuse to get together with friends! WE live too far out for anyone to visit, but what a blessing to be so close to your kids and grandkids to get to serve them in this way!!

Congratulations on your new granddaughter! Shop.com has great deals on baby clothes if your youngest daughter needs to dress the new wonder. All the best, Kat.

Wow! You are truly a blessed lady..and a blessing to your daughter, I'm sure! And what a wonderful plan, I absolutely love the 'sprinkle' event for the Mothers of more than one child. I have two (children (25 y/o daughter & 20 y/o son) then started fostered 3 mo. old twins, that we adopted 3.5 yrs later. when we first were blessed w/these little guys we didn't have the first thing for a new baby...and especially two of everything! It would have been really great if someone would have thought of this in our situation instead of sticking to the old tradition of using up our one shower per lifetime! The 'sip & see'...another perfect plan! The menu sounds yum...and the other really great plan is the part where the expecting Mohter has everything catered for her without worries! I'm certain everything will go smoothly and be a great hit with many compliments to follow!

I love the "Sprinkle" idea and hope it catches on. Around here a lot of women throw their own showers for #2 or #3 and are miffed if the turnout isn't what the first brought. You menu sounds lovely and I'm glad you chose to go with the pimento cheese instead of tuna. What a nice grandma Miss Grace Kathryn has.

I did a similar thing for my sister's second baby. We had a drop-in "Meet the Baby" party. It was much calmer for my sister, and we put a picture on the invitations so they doubled as birth announcements. I hope it goes well. Congratulations!

Congratulations!A new baby to love and to brighten your lives."Sip & See" luncheon sounds delightful.I love the menu that you have planned, glad you changed your mind on the tuna.I have to agree with the suggestion to make lettuce cups for some of the chicken salad or tomato cups stuffed with the chicken salad. It will be a delightful time for the new baby to be introduced to everyone and for Mom to be able to enjoy the visit with everyone as she enjoys the compliments and oohs and aahs.Have a wonderful time!May good health and happiness be spilled over Grace Kathryn. Blessings to your family.

Your menu is beautiful and I think the event sounds wonderful. I am sure your daughter will appreciate it and I know friends and family will love the chance to gather and celebrate this new life, and get to see her in person! :) I'm in GA too and had never heard of a Sip & See - now I have to try to think up an excuse to have one! :D

That is a lovely tradition. I never thought of it and I'm from La. Congratulations on your granddaughther. To your oldest granddaughter, she's a blessing, I know. Tell her that she can be the big cousin. She'll enjoy that. Your menu looks tasty. Thanks

What a great idea...and the menu is just right (with the pimento cheese change!) I had not heard of a "sprinkle" and think its a great idea, but since it didn't work out the "sip & see" (which I also had not heard of) is perfect. I'm going to consider doing that to show off our new cabin in the N.Ga mountains--invite neighbors to get together. Congrats, grandma!

Funny thing, yesterday I was just telling my 4 year old son about the party that our church gave for him when he was born, and then my son asked me if they had a party for my 2.5 yr old daughter and i truthfully had to say "no", she was so sad. I will just avoid this question when my fourth child asks. A "sprinkle" would have been nice.I will definitely remember this!

Oh, I guess I should have mentioned the all-out baby shower I had when my first daughter was born, it was 5 years later that I had my son finally and really did not expect another baby shower. Although it was not really expected it was very appreciated, as I am sure the next "sprinkle" I host will be.

What a fine grandma! I thank you for sharing the "sprinkle" and the "sip&see"; both fine, non-selfish approaches to what people really want from a party...just the chance to share their joy.I know I would've loved a party for #2--not for stuff, but to honor her presence.

I love this idea and hope that your day goes well. Having three daughters (20, 18 & 15) I'll have to keep the "sprinkle" in mind along with the Sip and See...Great idea and menu!!

I lived in the south all my life (57 yrs) and I've never heard of a Sip & See either - but a good idea! Whatever chicken salad you make (or buy) add red seedless grapes cut in half to the mixture. Also I would just put the chicken salad in a bowl - not on bread - that way you can make it ahead of time and store in the frig. Buy some varities of bread (for visual effect) and put the bread in a baby container (over sized bottle, doll carriage, etc)- which can be done at the last minute. Another quick & easy item is to put a round of cream cheese on a plate (pink in this case) and surround it with Black Cherry fruit spread made by St. Dalfour. Put a pink baby item in the middle of the cream cheese round for presentation. On a separate pink plate place the "pretty" cracker shapes - butterflies, flowers, etc. This cream cheese/fruit spread is a great flavor combination- you'll love it. Hope you have a great girly day!

whoops - sorry - it's me again - I forgot to add that I would change the bow tie pasta to the multi colored rotini (corkscrew) pasta. The reason is because the balsalmic dressing can "stain" the bow tie pasta and make it look "dirty" after a while - plus the multi colored pasta has a better presentation and won't look discolored and it's healthier. Add sweet peas, broccoli florets, grape tomatoes, small carrot sticks & chopped yellow squash to make a garden pasta salad. Sorry - I get carried away with food - I'm a head chef & catering & kitchen manager - I live, eat & breath FOOD!!!

great menu! my family's from the south and though i don't remember a "Sip & See" I sure do remember various get-togethers much like this one! cheese pimiento sandwiches sound like a great sub for the tuna.. and besides, you already had chicken salad on the menu, so it's not a loss to forego the tuna. I like luv2cooks idea of milti-colored pasta instead of bowties (do they make multi-colored bowties?). if you something more towards italian-style dressing with seasonings rather than balsamic, it may not stain and be more visually appealing... the real reason i wanted to comment, though, is to say my grandmother's nickname is skunkee! hehe

Oh what joy a new baby is! Congratulations to your family. I live in suburban Boston where all traditions for showers and lifestyle events are homogenized into whatever suits the families involved. You never know what's next around here. It makes it very interesting. The best part is, you can do no wrong. My mother, raised by victorian Bostonians, was very proper about showers. When I was expecting my twins at age 35, she wouldn't let anyone give me a shower because she was superstious that something would go wrong, so they had it a month later. Boy, was I mad at my friends! All turned out fine, and my girls are almost 27 now. I can't remember a shower without deviled ham on finger rolls. But I think you have it covered. Maybe cut the peanut butter sandwiches with cookie cutters into 1/2 sandwich sizes as to not waste. Kids like fruit kabobs. Some sugar-free beverages are appreciated by dieters and diabetics. Take pictures and post them so we can all enjoy your sip and see. All traditions have to start someplace so invent something wonderful, and have a few balloons. Pink. Pink or blue balloons tied to the mailbox or house signified a new baby had finally arrived. They look good in photos, too.

Congratulations on the arrival of little Grace Kathryn. A true blessing indeed. I am so glad that you introduced us to this "Sip and See" concept. I love it!!! I too wanna find any excuse to throw one. :) Good luck with yours. I think that the menu is perfect.

Well well, now I know what to do for my good friend who just had a baby! One of her friends took control of the baby shower, and I felt helpless. Sip and See! Perfect, and thank you SO much for the idea. Your menu sounds awesome. I once brought 3 types of deviled eggs to one party, and all 3 were hits. Cheddar Bacon, Spicy Horseradish Pickle and Traditional. All were found right here on AR! Let us know how the event turns out!

I love this idea of "Sip & See"!! Thank you very much for sharing that idea, I think your menu sounds great, and the cookies are adorable!! My husband and I have been married for about a year and a half now, MIL wanted us to invite everyone for a Open House and see our gifts...Is it too late to have a "sip & see" for that? LOL!
