Apples, Apples, Apples!

Apples, apples everywhere. I've been craving Apple Danish, so I picked up some gorgeous Cortlands from Apple Castle, not too far from home.

This picture is borrowed from their website. Click it to visit!

Don't they look yummy?    Peeled them...   sliced them...

Flour, salt, and shortening combine to begin the dough. Cut it together like this.
When it looks crumbly, separate the egg and add milk to the yolk. Mix together.

Add the egg and milk to the dough and mix until it comes together. Start rolling half the dough out on a floured surface. It has to be rolled pretty thin.
There, it's done. Press into the pan. Pour in apples layered with cinnamon and sugar.
There's just something magical about cinnamon and sugar, isn't there?
I mean, doesn't cinnamon just make things taste wonderful?

Well, almost everything.

Roll out the rest of the dough and put the "lid" on. Seal the edges and cut slits in the top to let the steam escape.

Beat up the egg white and brush on top. The egg white makes the top get nice and golden brown. But it's not done yet!

Drizzle on a powdered sugar glaze after it cools. It's hard to wait.

There, it's finally done!

Have a slice.

Thanks for dropping by.

Oh my! It looks so delicious! I love anything with apples in. This recipe seems great because it's with homemade dough instead of those from the store. Great job and thanks for sharing!

Hey congrats Pam! Woohooo! What a treat to open up the home page, and to see your sweet, smiling self :D I love the blog, can't wait to try the recipe. I don't think I've ever seen Cortlands here in the Northwest, I wonder what would be a good sub. maybe Honeycrisp? Thanks so much for sharing.

About Me
I have three sons, ages 13, 12, and 9, who are very picky eaters (especially the middle one). Their favorite meal is a bowl of buttered pasta. I try to cook things that they might enjoy trying, but they're not always willing to try new things. My oldest is getting better. He actually eats real food much of the time now! In my spare time I teach second grade. I have introduced my students to cooking and/or new foods over the years. We've even baked cakes in my roaster right in the classroom!
My favorite things to cook
I love to try all sorts of new recipes, so I don't really have a favorite thing to cook. I go in phases, really. I've been doing more cupcake and cake decorating lately. I'll try almost anything if I think my family will eat it.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love making the pumpkin pies and other desserts for Thanksgiving. I always like to try one new dessert for each holiday. Baking Christmas cookies is a tradition that goes back as long as I can remember.
My cooking triumphs
I've made some pretty cool cakes for my boys' birthdays. They include a firetruck, baseball, football, and Pokeball. I've also used shaped pans to decorate everything from Barney and Elmo, Power Ranger, Jeff Gordon's #24 racecar, a dog and dog house, and most recently, a monkey and a penguin. One of my best triumphs has been teaching my boys to cook. They'll never go hungry.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I cooked a turkey I relied on my thermometer to tell when it was done. It wasn't.
