This will just be a quickie about my latest cake adventure and my first attempt at a completely fondant-covered cake. I decided to make a Father's Day cake for my husband. No ordinary cake would do. I Googled "Father's Day Cake" and a remote control brownie caught my eye. It was simply a… MORE

Part II - AssemblyThis part has no picture, so I'll just explain it. I used two cake boards which I cut square and taped together, then covered with foil. Thank heavens I doubled it, because this is one heavy cake. I bought dowel rod at Wally World and cut four lengths about 1 1/4 inches - the… MORE

Okay, so I can't quite compare with those names. I won't even claim to be close. They are, however, inspirational when it comes to decorating cakes and throwing parties. For my son's 12th birthday I created two cakes. I used Martha's monkey cake idea, but used a yellow cake mix. I've included a… MORE

So yesterday was my birthday. Not such a big deal since I've been over 21 for some time now. It was a bigger deal for my son. It was also his birthday. Tanner is now 12 years old and the proud owner of his first cell phone (you have to be 12 to own one around here.) 13 years ago my husband… MORE

I wonder just how many versions of the humble chocolate chip cookie have been invented. It seems each time I cruise the new pictures I end up wanting to try a new cookie recipe, and often it's chocolate chip. I guess I'm still searching for just the right recipe, but at the moment I'm not sure… MORE

How to decorate the Red, White, and Blue Cupcake:Step 1: Prepare a large piping bag with a large, round tip (I used a 1A).Step 2: Use a paintbrush to paint stripes of color on the inside of the bag starting near the tip and extending 4 or 5 inches up the bag (I used Wilton gel colors, one… MORE

1. How do you like your eggs? How don't I like my eggs (Okay, I don't like them sunny-side up.) 2. How do you take your coffee/tea?  Coffee? Lots of sweetened French Vanilla creamer. Tea? Lemon and Splenda.   3. Favourite breakfast food?  Bacon, eggs, toast, hashbrowns. Or MORE

Well, it's been quite a week. I finished report cards and passed them out today, stayed up with a sick 9 year-old last night, allowed the 11 year-old to stay home today too because he didn't feel well, and nearly ruined dinner tonight.       My youngest son (Birthday… MORE

Well, I never thought I'd sit here and blog, but I thought of a title for one by chance, so I had to start it. Now this may well be the only entry, but time will tell. So here I've collected 7 shots from my youngest son's birthday this past weekend. Mason turned 9. He's a foodie like his mom,… MORE

About Me
I have three sons, ages 13, 12, and 9, who are very picky eaters (especially the middle one). Their favorite meal is a bowl of buttered pasta. I try to cook things that they might enjoy trying, but they're not always willing to try new things. My oldest is getting better. He actually eats real food much of the time now! In my spare time I teach second grade. I have introduced my students to cooking and/or new foods over the years. We've even baked cakes in my roaster right in the classroom!
My favorite things to cook
I love to try all sorts of new recipes, so I don't really have a favorite thing to cook. I go in phases, really. I've been doing more cupcake and cake decorating lately. I'll try almost anything if I think my family will eat it.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love making the pumpkin pies and other desserts for Thanksgiving. I always like to try one new dessert for each holiday. Baking Christmas cookies is a tradition that goes back as long as I can remember.
My cooking triumphs
I've made some pretty cool cakes for my boys' birthdays. They include a firetruck, baseball, football, and Pokeball. I've also used shaped pans to decorate everything from Barney and Elmo, Power Ranger, Jeff Gordon's #24 racecar, a dog and dog house, and most recently, a monkey and a penguin. One of my best triumphs has been teaching my boys to cook. They'll never go hungry.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I cooked a turkey I relied on my thermometer to tell when it was done. It wasn't.
