My kids used to love that song when they were little. It came on some casset tape that I had picked up along the way of them growing up. The tape is long gone, but my family continues to like peanut butter. We go through almost a jar a week. It got me to thinking....peanut butter is a staple in most homes, although, I had a nanny from Australia one time that thought it was GROSS! A lot peanut butter has loads of bad stuff in it...I'll talk about that in a minute.
Peanut butter is one of Americas favorite foods. Found in about 75% of American homes according to peanutbutterlovers.com- i'm not kidding:) It is actually considered a staple. Here's a little bit of history from the web site:
There are many claims about the origin of peanut butter. Africans ground peanuts into stews as early as the 15th century. The Chinese have crushed peanuts into creamy sauces for centuries. Civil War soldiers dined on 'peanut porridge.' These uses, however, bore little resemblance to peanut butter as it is known today.
In 1890, an unknown St. Louis physician supposedly encouraged the owner of a food products company, George A. Bayle Jr., to process and package ground peanut paste as a nutritious protein substitute for people with poor teeth who couldn't chew meat. The physician apparently had experimented by grinding peanuts in his hand-cranked meat grinder. Bayle mechanized the process and began selling peanut butter out of barrels for about 6¢ per pound.
Wish I could find it for 6 cents a pound! My favorite peanut butter is Skippy Natural. It sells for around $3.49 a jar. It is a little on the pricey side, but I have found my kids wont eat natural peanut butter. Skippy Natural taste just like the stuff with the hydrogenated oil in it. What is in it Roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil and salt. It also got the 2008 Chefs Best Award for best taste. It is all natural, has no trans fat, no hydrogenated oil and you don't need to stir. It comes in creamy or chunky- that is a discussion for another day! Oh, I don't work for Unilever I just believe if you find a good product "spread" the word.
