Sunshiney Childhood Food Memories

Sunshine.  I’m not talking about a clear, blue sky day.  Sunshine  invokes memories of a grocery store chain that went out of business about 15 years ago.  This store was just fun.  I loved going there as a kid because they had a horse I could ride for only a penny. When my kids came along it was one of their favorite things to do. It was a machine but the horse, named Sandy, had a real saddle!  There was also a quaint coffee shop at the front of the store where you could get toast and eggs for less than a buck.  But the most amazing thing about the coffee shop was the donuts.  The cake donuts.  Now normally I am not a cake donut person but these things were special.  There was just something about them and their magical chocolate icing on top.  Sunday mornings in church you could just feel the anticipation as the mass was winding down.  Everyone was going to genuflect quickly and race to Sunshine for the cake donuts. So when the stores closed it was a sad day for all.  And the donuts faded to memory.  Until now!  We have a local coffee shop called “Jitters” and the owner spent a lot of time but she tracked down one of the original Sunshine donut machines and she has it up and running.  She even got one of the old donut makers from Sunshine to come instruct her workers on how to work the magic.  So the donuts are back.  Luckily “Jitters” is a long way from my house or my bum would be bursting out of my britches by Christmas!  But I had my “first” Sunshine donut in today when a co-worker brought them in for my anniversary.  I savored every bite.  But somehow being 44 and worrying about the aforementioned bum took the shine out of my Sunshine. Oh, but who am I kidding, I felt like I was 8 again eating that donut!  What are some of your fond childhood food memories?

I remember I was about 5 when my dad took me to this hole in the wall road side diner he sat me on a stool at the counter, as the waitress called him by name and asked him about his day. I remember looking around at the people drinking coffee talking, the sound of clanging dishes and silverware coming from the kitchen that I could almost see from my stool. I remember my dad ordering me somthing called a 'short stack' and the waitress smiling asking me could I eat all that. I remember this HUGE stack of pancakes being placed in front of me and my dad drenching it with syrup and butter telling me to dig in, and then him adding more and more syrup as it soaked in and he couldnt see it anymore. He asked how it was and I smiled he said this is now our place we can come here all the time, while we did go there many times after that I will always remember that day having pancakes at a counter with my dad.

This may not be as appetizing as either pancakes or donuts, but my grandparents (the Sicilian ones) used to hunt and cook wild mushrooms. I know, I know! They probably weren't even that good, but they were huge, and my Mamaw would bread them with crumbs and sautee them in olive oil. Then with her pasta and those mushrooms plus that sauce! It sends my memory back, I'll tell you! Thanks for the chance to relive that. Though, it kinda makes turkey sound bland. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

About Me
I'm a married mother of four and Grandma to the cutest little boy in the world. No, really! :) My hubby and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary in August. I work as a paralegal in a law firm. I describe myself as an ocean lover living in a landlocked state. My desire is to own my own warm, white sand beach island. In that regard my hobby is buying lottery tickets in hopes of winning enough money to buy that island. ;)
My favorite things to cook
Who knew you could be come an All Recipes addict when you don't really like following recipes? Finding inspiration on here is what its about for me. I like to get ideas and tailor them to our taste. I love to bake and am probably most creative cooking wise when I am baking. Although following recipes in baking is important. I love seafood and chicken but I'm married to a meat and taters kind of guy.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas dinners at my parents and trying to take on some of those cooking duties and learn their recipes, especially my Dad's stuffing. Making enormous platters of cookies and candies at Christmas time.
My cooking triumphs
The first time I made a fudge that actually turned out perfect. Go figure! I put it on a Christmas tray and took to Christams Eve at my parents and my Dad kept saying that it had to be store bought! To this day when I show up with fudge everyone says "so you've been shopping again!"
My cooking tragedies
Um, where do I start? The scariest is probably once, a long, long time ago when I was home with my oldest two who were 2 and 3 at the time and I was heating some oil on the stove to make them some popcorn and I turned my back on it to watch "One Life to Live" and got so engrossed in the soap the next thing I know the oil was on fire and it was quickly spreading to my cupboards. Luckily I got the lid on in time. But no cooking while soaps are on. Lesson learned!
