I am a student and therefore a budget cook. My roommate has described me as being a fearless and improvisational cook which is pretty true. I never doubt that I can make something although when I jump into the deep end its even odds whether I'll sink or float. Cooking is an adventure to me and I am still learning as I go.
My favorite things to cook
Vegetables. Fresh salads, steamed, braised, roasted...They're cheap and delicious. I am also a huge fan of soups. They're easy to experiment with and they keep you toasty in the winter.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom and I used to cook every Monday night while I was growing up. My dad would go off to bowling giving us the opportunity to make something other than meat and potatoes. The older I got the stranger the things we'd find to make. They didn't always turn out but I think this is what gave me my love of experimenting with food.
My cooking triumphs
Things I can cook well include: Lasagna, Mashed Potatoes, Soup Stock, and Potato Salad. It's a short list but I'm fantastic at those four things!
My cooking tragedies
Baking. No specifics. Just baking in general. I had a grandmother who never baked anything that didn't come in a tube and a mother who simply didn't have the patience or the attention span for it. Everything I ate growing up was either pillsbury or burnt. Christmas cookies became Christmas ornaments more often than not.
I have also never quite figured out Macaroni and Cheese which irritates me to the core because it's one of my favorite comfort foods.
