About this Cook
Until moving from UK to Canada I worked full-time so meals were always a rush and we ate what was in the cupboard and/or freezer. Now I have time to search for new ideas on allrecipes. As a child in UK my staple diet would consist of steak and kidney puddings, steak pies, stew and dumplings, fries cooked in lard, it's a wonder I don't have serious health problems. Living in Nova Scotia I have access to wonderful seafood and locally grown fruit and veg in season. My husband will eat anything I put in front of him, as a military man he says 'you shouldn't complain about any meal, it might be your last'. Not sure if that is a compliment or an insult!!
My favorite things to cook
I love trying new recipes, nothing that involves lots of chopping, I get bored. Pasta is my husbands favourite which is a close call with chicken curry. I love making cookies and muffins but we both watch what we eat and the kids have flown the nest so having cookies and muffins in the house is just too tempting.
My favorite family cooking traditions
When my kids were small they loved to eat spagetti, I knew when they were enjoying dinner because they wouldn't be bickering and the dog went without under the table unlike days when they had carrots or cauliflower. I used to try making things that my mother and grandmother made without ever weighing or measuring the ingredients but failed miserably. I love North American recipes that don't need weighing, it's all by cups, wonderful.
My cooking triumphs
A replica PRS guitar for my husbands birthday last year, it took me ages to decorate as I had to do it secretly, I had to keep checking the real guitar for details, and it was so hot during the day, I had a problem getting the icing to stay put but it was awesome, almost too good to eat. I loved making theme birthday cakes for the kids when they were little, batman, bart simpson, all good fun.
My cooking tragedies
Making a birthday cake for my daughter before putting the pet ferrets away, big mistake. Whilst I was poised over the baking tray with a large bowl of mixture, a baby ferret run up my back, took a dive from my shoulder into the cake mixture. That was one years that my daughter got a bought cake!! There was also the time that we laid out the buffet for after my daughters Christening service before we went to the church, we each thought the other had put the cats out! Thankfully, we arrived back before the guests did and concealed the damage, and the cats,

Peach Sorbet
I made a syrup by boiling my water and sugar for 5 minutes until it thickens slightly. This made a pretty good sorbet even though I don't have an ice cream maker.
