About this Cook
Retired from the US Army after 21 years; enjoy classical music, fine wine, hunting, fishing, camping and the company of my wife, grand kids and great grand kids. Been retired from the Army since November of '91, finally called it quits and really retired last year ('08/07)to be home with my wife while she recovered from cancer. Never felt better about being retired than I do now.
My favorite things to cook
Breads, soups, anything German (probably my best specialities), pasta dishes and just about anything for the BBQ grill. I really enjoy creating fine meals with wild game.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. Turkey or Ham, and my mother's special receipe dressing/stuffing. Candied yam, green bean cassarole, and fresh cressant rolls.
My cooking triumphs
The perfect quiche, made in a cast iron dutch oven, in a Boy Scout camp while teaching outdoor cooking to a bunch of picky ladies who swore I couldn't do it. You should have seen their faces when I lifted the lid off the dutchy! There wasn't a mouth in the bunch you couldn't have driven an 18 wheeler through. I was amazed myself, as I had never done it before, and it was really a gamble on my part - guess God was in my corner that time.
My cooking tragedies
Hard to find. My mother started me out the right way - easy to harder. I guess the closest to tragedy whoul be a batch of yeast rolls that were over done (kneeded too long) and came out really tough. Haven't made that mistake since, and it only happened the one time.

Ron's Bread Machine White
Excellent recipe!!! I am super sensitive to soy and soy bi-products so have recently begun (again) baking my own bread, as almost everything on the grocer's shelves contains soy or soy bi-products. This recipe proved to be an excellent first choice. I decided to make a slight change the second time around, as I was out of "bread flour" and substituted regular self rising flour and as an experiment added a second egg, and instead of the vegetable oil (which often contains soy oil) I used light olive oil. I was very pleasently surprised with a very rich, light loaf of very tasty bread, with a wonderfully nutty light crust. I will use this recipe many times over.
