I live in Southern Mississippi. I grew up with a Grandmother and Mother who cook well, and a family who ate well (alot!). Southern cooking mostly but my dad always cooked on Friday and Saturday night. He invented recipes and most of them were awesome. He was a steak and salad man. So most of my cooking I draw from those influences. But I also really like Ethnic foods.
My favorite things to cook
I cook whatever I have the taste for. Most of the time its aggravating for my family because we don't eat the same thing twice. I guess that's where the internet and TV influences our eating culture now.
My favorite family cooking traditions
All of the eating holidays are spent at my Grandmothers (she's 95) and my husbands Grandmothers home. We usually share lunch and dinner between the two houses. They are both awesome cooks. I'm so glad my children are able to experience their heritages like that. I hope they appreciate it.
My cooking triumphs
My mother in law always has fruitcake and fruitcake cookies for the holidays and I was always a little overwhelmed by the ingredients and the recipes. But Christmas of 2007 I used one of the recipes on this site and it was awesome. She told me it would have to set at least a week but we had to try a little bite. Needless to say by midnite the cake was gone!!
My cooking tragedies
My husband and I dated my last semester of college. He moved in a little 2 room bungalow before I left for college. One of the ladies at the office (we worked together for a summer) found out he LOVED dumplings. So she told me this easy way to make dumplings. So the night before I left I attempted these dumplings made out of canned biscuits. It was a huge glob of dough! ugh! He ate a couple of bites but I didn't! Gross!
