About this Cook
Not much to tell here! I'm an average woman with an average life, but that sure doesn't keep me from being glad I'm alive each day, and sucking air! I grew up as a military brat, and finally settled in Kentucky right spang in the middle of bluegrass and horses, red barns and white picket fences. Beautiful state! I was a vegetarian for several years because I feel that's the wisest choice on our shrinking planet, but ended up going back to meat-eating when I married. The path of least resistance - Hubby is most definitely meat-and-potatoes dude.
My favorite things to cook
Shucks - ALL of it! I'm not nuts about desserts or baking, but truly enjoy experimenting with all other categories. I really enjoy finding recipes for new and unusual vegetables, as that's my favorite part of eating.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every holiday that our family gets together, I'm instructed that I MUST make spaghetti and meatballs. We all eat ourselves silly with red sauce and mountains of pasta, all mopped up with platters of good bread. I get nominated as chief cook and bottle-washer for most family get-togethers, which of course secretly delights me!
My cooking triumphs
French silk pie, and black-bottom pie that I made for a special occasion. Since I rarely bake, these were momentous events!
My cooking tragedies
Well, there's too many to name! Hah! The time I attempted to puree hot soup in the blender, and (you see this coming, don't you?) the heat caused expansion and blew the lid off the blender in an explosion, spraying the entire kitchen with lovely cream of tomato soup! The time I tried to make cheese grits, as I was a newly Southern gal, and couldn't even get the neighbor's dog to eat them - ick! Too bad that I eyeballed the recipe on the box and decided that 2 cups of grits would NEVER be enough, so I had TRIPLED the recipe...!! We had about a 33-gallon washtub full of cheese grits that I couldn't PAY anyone to eat! Hah!

Italian Sausage Jambalaya
Very good! I used the recipe for a great springboard, & tweaked it just a bit (as we cooks will do!). I browned the hot Italian sausage first, then crumbled. I tripled all the veggies, added mushrooms, used only half the sausage stated (just wanted the taste), & added Tony Cachere's to the seasonings. Put it all in the crockpot, & let it cook on low for 6-7 hours. Delicious!!! Oh, I also doubled the brown rice portion & added that to the crockpot with everything else. At the very end, I stirred in about 1-2 teaspoons of file' powder. OMG! What a fantastic meal!!! I realize it sounds as if I made a lot of changes, but really it was just playing with proportions rather than the actual ingredients. Great budget recipe - I end up with about twelve 1-1/2 cups servings for around $7! It also freezes beautifully & reheats extremely well. So, 5-stars for all those things!

Slow Cooker Maple Country Style Ribs
Oh, boy. I was really surprised at how badly this turned out. I adore all of the ingredients and thought this sounded like a winner of a recipe, but when everything was combined, the 'warm' spices were simply overwhelming. I followed the recipe to the letter, even wondering if the 1/4 tsp. of each spice would be enough to taste... Taste it I COULD. Like pumpkin pie smeared on ribs! Thanks for the post anyway.

Maria's Pepper Steak
Fantastic idea. My prep notes: 1. Flank steak is so expensive that it is totally out of range in my house. Other cuts work very well, and don't get tough when boiled in the sauce. 2. Steak itself doesn't need to be boiled for 15 minutes; it will cook in 1-2 minutes if thinly sliced, and then stir-fried. Great taste, great sauce, great presentation. Looks great on platter with some rice and any kind of stir-fried veggies! (Try adding some dried lily buds and some shiitake mushrooms along with the red bell peppers!! Ymmm!!)
