Although I have been cooking well over 20 yrs, I still feel like a beginner. There are all kinds of things I have never tried to prepare, so this is still a learning experience for me.
My favorite things to cook
We love Mexican food. I have to be careful of the hot peppers, but usually I just use 1/2 the number, or try it without peppers.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother making homemade noodles. I remember asking her for the recipe, I was about 25 at the time, and she just looked at me and said "there is no recipe, you just do it." I got her to make a batch, and sure enough - no recipe! A double handful of flour, 2 eggs, a pinch of salt, and enough water to make a dough. I think I left something out. And she didn't use a bowl! She just put everything on the oilcloth, mixed it up and rolled it out. Those were the best noodles, and I am the only one of us girls she showed how it was done.
My cooking triumphs
I guess there have been a few, but when my daughter came home from the Army we had a get together at the park and she invited some friends. She had insisted that I make my potato salad and had told all of her friends that it was the best in the world. That was a proud moment.
My cooking tragedies
I think it was probably when I was a new wife. My husband wanted gravy, and I told him I didn't know how to make it. He said it's easy, just take bacon grease, flour, and milk. Cook it in a skillet. It was somewhere between wallpaper paste and wet cement. Tasted that way too.
