Being the oldest of 4 girls, with hard-working parents, I grew up watching my chinese/nicaraguan grandmother cook everyday to feed her entire family. I learned a great deal from her and she passed on all her habits, like putting worcestershire, garlic and rum in everything. Cooking is the only thing that can make me feel gratified, no matter what.
My favorite things to cook
Soups, BBQ, Side Dishes, Paella, Stews, Asian
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandmother's thanksgiving stuffing, aka "el famoso relleno." She makes so much of it that I can almost swear the freezer in the garage is dedicated to freezing the extra "relleno" so we can have some for christmas, and then eat it until february. It's amazing and a true treat. The entire family looks forward to it every year. Holidays just wouldn't be the same without it, ever.
My cooking triumphs
As soon as I got my first pay check, I decided to throw a huge feast to get my family all together and I was to cater the entire thing. I made paella, prime-rib, avocado egg rolls, beer-battered shrimp, broc. casserole, mac-n-cheese balls, baked and whipped potatoes, tiramisu, and punch for about 35 people, with my sister's help and my neighbor's ovens, we did it in about 6 hours.
My cooking tragedies
My first tiramisu. 3 xmas's ago, I offered to make it. I bought enough ingredients to make it for about 50 people. I totally screwed up the whipping of the mascarpone with the egg yolks and sugar and it became extremely lumpy. I showed up with no dessert and a pan full of egg-white omelettes. I was sad for weeks.
