Lemon Whippersnappers

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2006
The dough was very sticky- putting it into the fridge is is clutch. The texture is different, but in a good way. I used a sunstar cookie cutter to make them look mini suns- perfect for the yellow color.

Cornmeal Cookies I

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2006
I really liked these- very much a balanced mix between cornbread and sugar cookies. Texture and consistency is like a cookie, yet your tongue is trying to place the slight underlying semblence of cornbread. Yum!

Authentic French Meringues

Reviewed: Jul. 21, 2006
They are ok. Make sure to beat the mixture for a long long time in order for the cookies to hold some shape- otherwise you would get flat disks. 2nd time: Don't "piecemeal" pipe the meringues. I wanted to have a nice top so piped a swirl on top of "blobs". The disconnect between the blob and swirls ended up crystallizing - which could be cool if you want a "volcanic meringue" type of look. :)

Pretty good. One and a halved and used chicken thighs. Good stuff. Marinated overnight in the sauce, and skipped the frying. This recipe is quick, easy, and tasty.

Cashew Cookies

Reviewed: May 22, 2006
They're decent. The frosting is not too sweet, but you could leave it off if you're just looking for a more plain, nutty flavor. The cookie had a toffee flavor. Mom gave it a 3 and they weren't attacked by the fam, so I probably won't make again.

Sweet Potato Rolls

Reviewed: May 21, 2006
Very light and fluffy inside, and dense and delightful on the outside. I could not taste the sweetpotato- it just made roll more like potato bread in texture. My mum loved these. They remind me of honey bread which we used to buy at the local bakery for school.

Banana Cream Pie III

Reviewed: May 16, 2006
Very good and very easy. I used my mom's pie crust recipe, 1 fat free vanilla pudding and 1 normal banana pudding, and Cool Whip. Easy, tasty, and hard to turn down. Don't forget to wait to put on the bananas until it is near serving time or else they quickly brown while chilling.

Garlic Top Sirloin Pot Roast

Reviewed: May 13, 2006
Maybe it was my slow cooker or me, but my roast had fallen apart after 5.5 hours in the slow cooker on high. I had to turn it into a stew. And overall, a rub of garlic, salt, and pepper and cooked in the oven tastes better. Minced 1/2 the garlic and used as a rub and sliced other 1/2 and inserted into roast. Won't try again.

White Cheese Chicken Lasagna

Reviewed: May 13, 2006
Amazingly good. If you boil your chicken right before, don't forget to save 2 cups of the chicken broth. I used fresh spinach after microwaving on high for 1 and 1/2 minutes. Used 2 cloves garlic and 1/3 an onion. Skipped the fresh parsely...and it all turned out delicious. The parents fawned over it.

Pecan Crackers

Reviewed: May 13, 2006
Mom loves this. I used a full pack of graham crackers, and added a dash of vanilla. Scattered pecans under and on the butter mixture. Cooked 8-9 minutes to prevent burning. Used Pam on the foil, and I'm glad that I did. They were very easy to make- if you are using a flat cookie sheet, be sure to turn the edges of the foil upward to keep the liquid, which spreads out a lot during baking, from overflowing. I did have some problems with my graham crackers "shifting" during cooking. Cut into triangles for a beautiful presentation. I found them slightly too buttery in feel and taste, but still quite good.

English Muffins

Reviewed: May 13, 2006
They were ok. Pretty easy to make, and I liked the texture the the corn meal gave to them. However, next time I will make them bigger, using something larger than a standard muffin cutter- they did not expand horizontally as much as I expected, so I nearly ended up with mini-muffins. VERY dense. Also, I had to cook them substantially longer for the inside to cook. I might cook them partly in the oven next time, and partly on a griddle to get the right texture. Family didn't gobble them up, which is how I gauge recipes, lol. Give them a try if you're an english muffin fan.

Ninety Minute Cinnamon Rolls

Reviewed: May 13, 2006
For cinnamon rolls, I have had much better. These were not sweet enough - the inner mixture did not permeate the remaining dough, so you ended up with sugary filling and nonsugary bread. Whole process is not difficult, but you end up with cinnamon muffins, not rolls.

Poppy Seed Loaf

Reviewed: May 9, 2006
I would not make this again. I cut the recipe in half. The poppy seed mixture was lacking in taste and quantity. The top browned too quickly, and the overall taste was bland. I had to throw it away. The other reviewer's use of 4 mini pans would probably spread the poppyseed flavoring around better.

Soft Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2006
So I don't even like oatmeal cookies, and I couldn't help but to nibble on these. They weren't crazily oatmealy- and were definately soft inside with a crispness on the exterior. Everyone loved them...made half the batch with raisins, and half without. Would definately make again- so easy!

Buttery Soft Pretzels

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2006
These turned out pretty well. It was a lot of work rolling out the dough. I added about 1/4 cup more water to make the dough more workable for kneading. The pretzels were dense, chewy, and awesome. I also slightly decreased both salt and sugar due to past reviews, and didn't miss them. My roomie liked them.

Naan

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2006
I have mostly forgotten was naan tastes like, but this was relatively similar. As I live in an off-campus apartment, I didn't have access to a real grill, so I tried the following: 1. Cooking it on an open George Foreman Grill 2. Cooking it on it closed. 3. Cooking on a grill pan in the oven. 4. Grilling it in a toaster oven. The opened George Foreman was best. And another tip: Don't knead in the minced garlic. Add it to the hot melted butter and let it soak in for 10 minutes or so. Then apply the butter- it is delicious, and you don't have chunks of pungent garlic in some bits and not others. I halved the recipe.

S'mores

Reviewed: Feb. 28, 2006
3.5 actually. They weren't amazing, but still became quickly addicting. Good both warm and cold. We cooked the bottom graham cracker layer for 5 minutes before continuing with the recipe in order to minimize crumbling. Worked out ok. Make sure to grease the pan. Milk chocolate chips might taste better as well.

Russian Tea Cakes I

Reviewed: Feb. 28, 2006
I made these without nuts, and would recommend including them. Without, the texture is too soft. But, the taste is decent. Everyone agreed on 4 stars- I would have given 3. make sure to wait until they cool or else the powdered sugar will be sucked into the cookie and create a gooey outer coating. Thanks for the recipe! Also might try with almonds and almond extract.
