About this Cook
Hi, my name is Shelby and I AM Grumpy's Honeybunch! :-) I have two grown sons and a DIL along with Grumpy that I love to cook for. I grew up in a vegetarian atmosphere, but also was surrounded by meat eaters as my dad wanted his meat an potatoes even though my mom was vegetarian. So, I have had a taste of both worlds and like them both. My grandmother was an awesome baker. She always had cookies, pies, and cakes in her home. My favorite cookie was her sugar cookie (frosted!) and my favorite cake was Mayonnaise! My nanny is gone now (5 years already) but my memory of her lives on. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her and the impact she had on my life. I have started a blog and in March I will be a part of the daring bakers group. You can view my blog at shelbymaelawstories dot blogspot dot com.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook and bake. I love learning new things. Most recently I have found a passion for Indian Cuisine! One of the graduate students in my department recently completed his degree (he was from India) and to celebrate he took a few of us to the Indian resturaunt - where I had my very first experience with Chicken Tikka Masala, Samosas, & Naan! I love it and can't stop thinking about it...therefore I am collecting as many recipes as I can to try! I do a lot of baking also as I work for a non-profit group where counseling is done out of a home for abused women. I am the main cook for these weekends and I love making these women feel special with my cooking/baking and table settings.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Summer fish frys at my aunt and uncles home. Homemade fudge and popcorn on Saturday nights while a child! When my boys were younger Friday night was homemade pizza and movie night.
My cooking triumphs
My best compliment ever - a cheesecake I made was described to be "better than Juniors!" The pumpkin fudge recipe on this site that I reviewed at 5 stars....this is an awesome cooked fudge recipe. My son totally loves the fudge! As you might see, fudge was one of my tragedies...well not so much anymore!
My cooking tragedies
Once when I was first married, I made fudge. It didn't set up and I was too embarrassed to tell my hubby, so I hid it in the closet (no idea WHY I did such a thing!) and ended up forgetting about it. We came across it one day cleaning and I had to fess up, he had more of a laugh because I tried to hide it!

Banana Rum Cake
The cake recipe is perfect as written. I am not a big cake mix user as I prefer to make homemade, but I am not against using cake mixes either! I am giving 4 stars because the amount of frosting is way too much for me. I ended up using the 2 Tbsp of rum, the 1/3 cup butter and only 2 cups of powdered sugar and the frosting was just the right consistency. However, if making this again, I would halve the frosting that I made as it was enough for 2 cakes.

My Amish Friend's Caramel Corn
This is a really great recipe. I followed the main ingredients but substituted grey sea salt (used 1/2 teaspoon) and added a couple pinches of red pepper flakes to the syrup mixture before boiling. Gives the perfect balance of salty/spicy/sweet!

Chocolate Zucchini Muffins
these get 4 stars because I did not really follow the recipe exactly. I may have loved it if I had - but I just can't find it in myself to use a whole cup of oil in my baking. I followed the recommendation to sub 2 bananas for 1/2 cup of the oil. They were still very moist and I could definitely taste the banana in the muffin.
