About this Cook
Looking forward to retiring in late 2011. Foodwise, I'm diabetic, as is my husband. However, he also has a bunch of foods he's medically intolerant of (the docs won't say he's allergic because eating the foods don't kill him): anything with soy (flour, bean, lecithin, oil, etc.), most dry beans, all cabbages (including broccoli and cauliflower), and a few other things. Just for the soy, eating out or grocery shopping is either almost impossible or a long process!

My favorite family cooking traditions
Mom teaching me to make porcupines (meatballs with rice) when I was 8. Mom's split pea soup on Xmas Eve. Dad going on a fresh-fruit milk-shake kick one summer -- the oddest one was watermelon, and the cantaloupe one was pretty good. He also made horrid pancakes to start every new year! My uncle's bar-be-ques. My aunt's chicken and (home-made) noodles. Mom used to make animal shape birthday cakes for me, until she was vacuuming excess toasted coconut for the reindeer head-shaped cake, and vacuumed up one of the black licorice antlers!
My cooking triumphs
Continuing to make lasagne after my first (now ex-) husband put ketchup on it before he even tasted it! [I never made it for him again!] (I guess this was more triumph over tragedy!)
My cooking tragedies
My mother always cooked very moist scrambled eggs. Dad preferred dry scrambled eggs, as did I. I found a recipe that was perfect, and when trying it for my folks the first time (I was maybe 14), I added TWICE the amount of salt. Dad still preferred my scrambled eggs, so I always made them from then on! Mom made superb, always PERFECT poached eggs though.
