Pie Crust IV

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2008
Finally I am confident with my pie crust. This is such a good recipe. I now reign as the pie crust queen in my family :) I use butter flavored crisco and follow the recipe exactly, not handling any more than necessary. It comes out perfectly.

French Toast Stars

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2008
Awesome french toast! My kids wanted breakfast for dinner and I used thick white french toast bread and made exactly as directed. My girls ate it without anything on it, one son ate it with powdered sugar sprinkled on and one with syrup. I ate it plain it was so good. My kids wanted it the next morning and my husband made it with whole wheat bread and no orange zest. I wasn't there, but they all loved it.

Quick and Easy Chicken Noodle Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 30, 2007
We love this! I follow the recipe as is, although I throw in a few more carrots because we like them. This is really fast if you boil and cut your chicken before hand and keep in baggies in the freezer to take out as needed.

Wonderful Short Ribs

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2006
I'm excited about this recipe, because my husband does not like ribs, and he really liked these. I cooked the recipe as directed except used a little less red pepper flakes for kids. They were a little watery, but the meat was incredibly tender and pretty much just fell apart. The flavor was really good.

My Mother-in-Law's Cheese Sauce...ssshh Don't Tell Her

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2006
My husband and especially my kids really like this cheese sauce. I think it's the processed cheese :-). Which is why it's not my absolute favorite, but whatever helps the vegetable get eaten, right? It's good.

This was pretty good. I'll make it again, but probably with less mayo.

Dad's Double Whole Grain Pancakes

Reviewed: Aug. 2, 2006
I love pancakes made with whole wheat much more than my kids do, but they loved these just as much as I did. I also used 1 1/2 c milk and 3/4 c water instead of the powdered milk, and dropped a few blueberries in some of them. These have a really good flavor and texture. Thanks!

Shrimp Lemon Pepper Linguini

Reviewed: May 23, 2006
This is awesome. I also doubled the sauce and am glad I did. It is great also with only 1/2 of the butter. I use chicken broth to compensate the other half. It is also good with vegetables cooked in the sauce in the step prior to adding the butter and shrimp. I like any combination of zucchini, red peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, etc. We sprinkle some parmesan on at the end. For my kids I reduce the pepper a lot; I only use about 1/4 the amount. My husband and I sprinkle more pepper on our own.

Extra Easy Hummus

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2006
This was a really good recipe for hummus without tahini. The cumin was a little much, and I love cumin. It is better halved. It is also better with about 1 TBS lemon juice. I'll make it again I'm sure. We ate this with pita chips (allrecipes) and cut up vegetables.

Pita Chips

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2006
These were a hit in my house! My kids loved them plain, and the rest of us also dipped them in hummus. Excellent either way. I did not have chervil but apparently it is used a lot in French cooking and is really only good if it's fresh. I will be looking for some to see how it tastes, but these were excellent without. I used whole wheat pita bread, and the oil/seasoning mixture was about 2x more than I needed. They also needed to cook about 14 minutes in my oven to crisp.

Glazed Meatloaf II

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2005
My husband and I loved this meatloaf. My pickier kids still wanted extra ketchup, but we all loved the glaze with it. I -almost- made it exactly as said, except I did use 1/2 cup bread crumbs for the shredded bread slices(I halved the recipe) and I actually made 4 small rectangle shaped loaves and just cooked them on a cookie sheet. This cut the cooking time down to probably around 45 minutes total, but could possibly be less because I didn't check earlier. I put the glaze on after about 20 minutes. Next time I will try cooking on foil or parchment paper because these really stuck to the metal. I also only had bouillon cubes that wouldn't crumble, so I actually microwaved it in the lemon juice to dissolve it. I had to add lemon juice by the time it fully dissolved to have the correct amount of lemon juice after it kept evaporating slightly in the microwave. I also accidentally doubled the dry mustard and I don't know how it would taste with the correct amount, but double was delicious! Just writing the review makes me want some more!

Pork Roast with Thyme

Reviewed: Nov. 21, 2005
I actually wanted to give this recipe a 3, but I'll go with my husband's 4 because it really did turn out well. I just prefer more flavor. To me it was a very mild, almost bland tasting pork roast. I made it exactly according to the recipe and I think it will be better tonight chopped up with barbeque sauce for sandwiches. It wasn't dry at all, which was good. I also put baby carrots around the outside, which really tasted like the other ingredients. My kids wouldn't eat them but I liked the different flavor they took on. They were a little tangy. The meat really didn't take on the tang, though. Will try a different recipe next time.

Banana Bread V

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2005
I'd give this recipe about 4 1/2 stars. I've also taken some suggestions from other reviewers, which brings it up to a 5. It's a 5 if you add the vanilla, and the cinnamon is good, too, making it a bit of a spice bread. I like it with or without, depending on the day. It's good with 1/2 brown sugar, too, but just about as good with all white. My kids love this recipe. Also, is better with more than 1 cup banana...add about 1/4 - 1/3 cup.

Lime Chicken Soft Tacos

Reviewed: Oct. 26, 2005
A great quick meal! I actually had to 1/2 the recipe because I only had short of a pound of chicken thawed. I was making cheese quesadillas for the kids and my husband and I were hogging the chicken when one spied it and wanted a bite. It was all over from there. My 4 kids loved the chicken and kept eating it by itself. The flavor was wonderful and my chicken cubes were small enough that the flavor was able to soak in without marinading. Will be a regular. Oh, I did substitute dried cilantro (mexican oregano) because I was out of oregano. It was great. Will try with oregano next time.

Banana Flip

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2005
This was really good, I gave it to the kids today with their peanut butter sandwiches and they loved it. It did need to be colder, so I added 2 huge scoops of Breyer's Banana Bananza ice cream, and I must say it tasted almost exactly the same! (It has the same flavor combo) so next time I'll just add ice to get the same effect with fewer calories. A great would be low cal treat, that's pretty good for you, too.

Easy Chicken in Wine Sauce

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2005
This was good and easy. I didn't measure the salt and pepper, just sprinkled it on both sides and added a little seasoned salt, too, since this had been reviewed by a few as bland. It wasn't bland, and I agree with a previous reviewer who mentioned it reminded someone of chicken cacciatore. The tomatoes did add that taste. I'm not a fan of foods with a strong wine taste, so I did half chicken broth, half white wine. We also added a jar of artichoke hearts, and we ate it with rice and green beans. I will definitely use this recipe again, and will experiment with add-ins.

Easy Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2005
I loved that this was incredibly easy; just pour everything together. The sweetened condensed milk made it very smooth and not grainy like sugar can do. It tasted just like soft-serve ice cream you would get at McDonald's or Dairy Queen. That's not my favorite, but those in my family who love that thought this ice cream was the best! I like more of the Breyer's taste and texture that you can get with some other kinds of homemeade ice cream. I will definitely make this again, and try lower fat and add ins. The texture of this was great for that, I think. However, this recipe does not make a full ice cream maker of ice cream. Luckily, one serving was enough for me.

Heather's Healthy Oatmeal Surprises

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2005
My kids loved these (we all did). Nobody could tell these were made with whole wheat; I would never know. They are soft and sort of chewy with a great flavor, and stay that way even after the first day. I followed the recipe exactly, and next time might try a few substitutions (applesauce for butter, nuts, craisins, etc.) just for kicks. Love the recipe, I'll feel less guilty eating these then our regulars.

Monterey Chicken with Potatoes

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2005
This is a family favorite. The only things I do differently is I make a little more sauce (salsa/cheese/cilantro) because we like it, and I also add a can of corn which I spread over the chicken and potatoes. I've served it to company, and they loved it as much as we do.

Awesome Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2005
I'm sure these are worthy of a 5, I've eaten this recipe when others have made it but pot roast has been my downfall as a cook. The flavor was good but my roast was tough. I made it just as said. Oh, well. I'll keep trying.
