I'm currently working two jobs; both in food service. One I'm allowed to be creative, the other I do prep work for a woman who has run a wonderful small-town restaurant for more than 30 years.
My favorite things to cook
Breads, pies, my version of KFC coleslaw. I have several Mexican recipes I obtained when I worked in a Mexican restaurant owned by a native of Zacatecas.
Homestyle comfort foods like meatloaf and fried chicken. Love to try anything new when barbecuing! And there is no such thing as bad Italian or Greek food, IMO.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Special birthday menus: One child always wants lasagna; another always has to have a certain kind of cake (jello cake - not a traditional birthday cake!), another prefers barbecued rib-eye steaks.
Christmas was always a big deal at my paternal grandmother's; I still have some of her recipes but none of my family care for the plum pudding with hard sauce or homemade mincemeat.
My cooking triumphs
Oldest son wrestled at State; in Iowa this is a big deal. Each year after the season was finished there would be a banquet for the wrestlers, most of whom had been starving themselves for 3 months or better in order to make weight.
I always made a huge pan of my special barbecued meatballs and a large crockpot full of my hashbrowns and cheese casserole. The team always snarfed up every bit of it and I was expected to make these same two dishes every year.
My cooking tragedies
Many.
1.)First year my husband and I were married he went hunting and came back with pheasant. I made pheasant breasts with white wine sauce - one of my mother's recipes. Then I found out he hates the taste and smell of wine. Ever since, whenever I try out a new dish, I'm sure to hear: "This isn't going to be like that pheasant, is it?"
2.)I've tried baking brownies after forgetting to add the flour. I can tell you the result is a mess, but 8 year old boys will still take that pan and a spoon out on the back porch and eat it all.
3.) Divinity. To this day I still can't make the stuff. I've even killed a mixer trying!
