About this Cook
I'm retired after more than 21 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. I have a daughter who is currently smack in the middle of the Terrible Twos and a husband who's retired Army and an Iraq War veteran. Thankfully, we're finally done traveling and have settled ourselves in mostly rural Illinois, not far from the state capital. My current career: raising our daughter.
My favorite things to cook
Desserts, casseroles, soups/stews, generally traditional Midwestern fare
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom has been making "7Up Salad" for summer family get-togethers for as long as I can remember. And for the past several years, my youngest brother has been injecting and then deep-frying the family turkey on Thanksgiving.
My cooking triumphs
I've developed my own delicious vegetable/hamburger soup! But I'm not sharing the recipe yet, because I'm still tweaking it.
My cooking tragedies
I can't make good pie crusts or dumplings to save my life! And it took me forever to learn to make crispy fried chicken properly.

Fried Chicken Gizzards
Using the suggestions left by another reviewer, I tried marinating the gizzards in buttermilk overnight and adding a little MSG to the flour mixture. Otherwise, I left the recipe alone. The end result: gizzards that were better than some I've tasted, but I've tasted better, as well. So I'm toeing the middle of the line and going with three stars.

Roast Sticky Chicken-Rotisserie Style
Simply delicious, hot or cold! I changed one thing only because I had to: I used about half the amount of thyme before I ran out, so I used sage for the other half. Husband, 2-year-old and I all scarfed it down, even the cold leftovers. I will definitely make this again.

American Shepherd's Pie
All three of us (including the 2-year-old) gobbled this right up! I was forced to modify it because I could not find condensed vegetable soup, even after searching three different stores. So I made a double batch and used one can each of condensed broccoli and condensed celery soup. Because I doubled it to solve the soup problem, I made two pies. We ate one that night, and I left one without cheese and put it in the fridge for later in the week. When it was time to cook the second, I just used the same time and temperature, adding the cheese as directed by the original recipe. The second pie was just as good as the first! I will definitely make this again.
